1. Introduction

With the rapid growth of the Internet, information has become one of the most valuable assets in the world. Along with this growth, however, came new kinds of misuse of technology. Computer ethics refers to the set of moral principles and guidelines that govern the use of computers and the Internet. These principles tell users what is right and what is wrong when using technology, such as respecting the privacy of others, not stealing information, and not spreading false content. The rapid rise of cyber crime has made the study of computer ethics essential for every responsible digital citizen.

Cyber crime is any criminal activity that involves a computer, a network, or a networked device. Criminals use technology to steal money, steal identities, damage systems, and disturb the peace of society. Cyber crimes can range from hacking a social media account to stealing millions of rupees from a bank. Governments around the world, including India, have enacted special laws such as the Information Technology Act, 2000 to deal with these crimes and punish the offenders.

In this chapter we will study the ethical principles of computer use, the concept of digital citizenship, the major types of cyber crimes such as hacking, phishing, cyber bullying, and software piracy, and the safety measures that every user should adopt. We will also learn about the IT Act of India and the importance of secure passwords and data privacy. Being aware of these issues protects both individuals and society.

2. Computer Ethics and Digital Citizenship

Computer ethics is the branch of ethics that studies the responsible use of computer technology. Some important ethical principles for computer users are listed below.

Digital citizenship means using technology responsibly and safely as a member of the digital community. A good digital citizen respects others online, protects personal information, and uses the Internet for positive purposes. Digital etiquette, digital literacy, and digital rights and responsibilities are all part of being a good digital citizen.

3. Cyber Crimes and Their Types

A cyber crime is a crime committed using a computer or the Internet. The main types of cyber crimes are described below.

These crimes cause financial loss, emotional distress, and damage to reputation, and they are punishable by law.

4. Software Piracy and Intellectual Property

Intellectual property refers to the creations of the mind, such as inventions, books, music, software, and artistic designs. The legal right that protects these creations is called copyright. When a person or company creates software, they hold the copyright over it and the right to decide how it may be copied and distributed.

Software piracy is the illegal copying and distribution of software. Common forms of piracy include copying an application for friends, installing a single licensed copy on many computers, or downloading pirated software from the Internet. Piracy harms software companies, reduces their income, and discourages the development of new software. It also exposes users to viruses because pirated copies often contain malicious code.

There are, however, legal alternatives. Free and open-source software (FOSS) such as the Linux operating system and the LibreOffice suite is freely available to use, modify, and distribute. The GNU General Public License (GPL) is a licence that grants these freedoms. Using open-source software is ethical and legal.

5. Cyber Safety Measures

Every Internet user must follow safety practices to protect themselves from cyber crimes. Important safety measures include:

7. Password Security and Data Privacy

Passwords are the first line of defence against unauthorised access. A strong password should be at least eight characters long and should not contain easily guessable information such as a name or date of birth. Using a passphrase, two-factor authentication (2FA), and password managers further strengthens account security.

Data privacy is the right of an individual to control how their personal information is collected, used, and shared. Websites and apps collect user data, and users should read privacy policies before sharing information. The Right to Privacy has been recognised as a fundamental right in India, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is the modern law that regulates the processing of personal data and safeguards the privacy of Indian citizens.

Common Mistakes

  1. Believing that sharing your password with a close friend is safe. Passwords should never be shared with anyone.
  2. Clicking on links or attachments in emails from unknown senders, which is how most phishing attacks succeed.
  3. Thinking that pirated software is harmless. Pirated copies often contain viruses and support illegal activity.
  4. Assuming that only IT professionals can be victims of cyber crime. Anyone using the Internet can be a target.
  5. Using the same password for all accounts, which puts every account at risk if one is compromised.

By practising safe habits and ethical principles, every student becomes a responsible digital citizen who contributes to a safer Internet.
