1. Introduction

Chapter 13 of the NCERT Class 10 Sanskrit textbook "शेमुषी" (Shemushi) is called धातुरूपाणि, which means "Verb Forms" or "Conjugations". The word is धातुः (verb root) + रूपाणि (forms). In Sanskrit, every action word comes from a root called धातुः. For example, from the root पठ् (to read) come पठति (reads), पठति स्म (read), पठिष्यति (will read), and so on. A verb changes its form according to three things: the tense or mood (लकारः), the person (पुरुषः — first, second, third) and the number (वचनम् — singular, dual, plural). All these forms together are called the धातुरूपम् of that root. The chapter presents the conjugations of the most important roots: पठ् (to read), गम् (to go), भव्/भू (to be), कृ (to do), दा (to give), दृश् (to see), वद् (to speak), लिख् (to write) and अस् (to be, अस्ति). The chapter explains the present tense (लट्), the future tense (लृट्), the past tense (लङ्), the imperative (लोट्) and the optative (विधिलिङ्), each with their endings. Mastering धातुरूपाणि is essential because verb-form questions appear in every board paper and are needed for translation. This note explains the conjugations in English, gives the tables, and provides revision aids, a mind map, SVG diagrams, common mistakes and exam tips.

2. Understanding the Verb System

What is a लकारः (Tense/Mood)?

A लकारः is a set of verb endings that express time or mood. The main ones are: 1. लट् (present tense) — what is happening now: पठति (reads). 2. लृट् (future tense) — what will happen: पठिष्यति (will read). 3. लङ् (past tense / imperfect) — what happened: अपठत् (read). 4. लोट् (imperative) — command/request: पठतु (let him read!). 5. विधिलिङ् (optative) — should/could: पठेत् (should read).

The Three Persons (पुरुषाः)

Every verb has three persons: - प्रथमपुरुषः (third person) — he, she, it, they: सः पठति (he reads). - मध्यमपुरुषः (second person) — you: त्वं पठसि (you read). - उत्तमपुरुषः (first person) — I, we: अहं पठामि (I read).

The Three Numbers (वचनानि)

Each person has three numbers: एकवचनम् (singular), द्विवचनम् (dual), बहुवचनम् (plural). So each tense has nine forms (3 persons × 3 numbers).

Conjugation of पठ् in the Present Tense (लट्)

Person Singular Dual Plural
प्रथमपुरुषः पठति (reads) पठतः (two read) पठन्ति (they read)
मध्यमपुरुषः पठसि (you read) पठथः (you two read) पठथ (you all read)
उत्तमपुरुषः पठामि (I read) पठावः (we two read) पठामः (we read)

Conjugation of गम् in the Present Tense (लट्)

The root गम् (to go) becomes गच्छति (goes), गच्छसि (you go), गच्छामि (I go); dual गच्छतः, गच्छथः, गच्छावः; plural गच्छन्ति, गच्छथ, गच्छामः. Note how गम् changes to गच्छ.

Conjugation of भव् (to be) in the Present Tense (लट्)

Person Singular Dual Plural
प्रथमपुरुषः भवति भवतः भवन्ति
मध्यमपुरुषः भवसि भवथः भवथ
उत्तमपुरुषः भवामि भवावः भवामः

The Verb अस् (to be) — अस्ति

The root अस् is special: अस्ति (is), स्तः (two are), सन्ति (they are); असि (you are), स्थः, स्थ; अस्मि (I am), स्वः, स्मः. This is the most used verb in Sanskrit.

The Future Tense (लृट्) of पठ्

पठिष्यति (will read), पठिष्यतः, पठिष्यन्ति; पठिष्यसि, पठिष्यथः, पठिष्यथ; पठिष्यामि, पठिष्यावः, पठिष्यामः. The suffix इष्य is added to the root.

The Past Tense (लङ्) of पठ्

अपठत् (read), अपठताम्, अपठन्; अपठः, अपठतम्, अपठत; अपठम्, अपठाव, अपठाम. Note the prefix अ added to the root.

The Imperative (लोट्) of पठ्

पठतु (let him read), पठताम्, पठन्तु; पठ, पठतम्, पठत; पठानि, पठाव, पठाम. The imperative gives commands or blessings.

3. Grammar Highlights

The three tenses you must know well: लट् (present: पठति), लृट् (future: पठिष्यति), लङ् (past: अपठत्). The board usually asks to fill in one of these forms or to convert between tenses.

Important roots and their forms: - पठ् (read): पठति, पठिष्यति, अपठत्. - गम् (go): गच्छति, गमिष्यति, अगच्छत्. - भव्/भू (be): भवति, भविष्यति, अभवत्. - कृ (do): करोति, करिष्यति, अकरोत्. - दा (give): ददाति, दास्यति, अददात्. - दृश् (see): पश्यति, द्रक्ष्यति, अदर्शत्. - वद् (speak): वदति, वदिष्यति, अवदत्. - लिख् (write): लिखति, लेखिष्यति, अलिखत्.

Agreement: The verb agrees with the subject in person and number. If the subject is रामः (third person singular), the verb is पठति; if it is वयम् (first person plural), the verb is पठामः.

4. Message of the Chapter

धातुरूपाणि teaches the wonderful regularity of the Sanskrit verb system. Every action can be expressed precisely in the present, past, future, command and advice forms. By learning the endings of the main tenses and the forms of the common roots, a student can build correct sentences and translate easily. Regular practice (अभ्यासः) is the key to remembering all the forms.

Important Diagrams (SVG)

Diagram 1: The Verb Wheel of पठ्

The Root पठ् - to Read लट् (Present) - पठति reads - is reading now लृट् (Future) - पठिष्यति will read लङ् (Past) - अपठत् read - in the past लोट् (Command) - पठतु let him read विधिलिङ् (Advice) - पठेत् should read Golden Rule: One root gives five tenses - present, future, past, command and advice - learn the ending of each tense for every root.

Diagram 2: Persons and Numbers of the Verb

9 Forms of पठ् प्रथमपुरुषः पठति - he reads पठतः, पठन्ति मध्यमपुरुषः पठसि - you read पठथः, पठथ उत्तमपुरुषः पठामि - I read पठावः, पठामः Three Numbers एकवचनम् (singular), द्विवचनम् (dual), बहुवचनम् (plural) Golden Rule: Three persons and three numbers make nine forms in every tense - write all nine in a table for full marks.

Common Mistakes

  1. Wrong tense endings: लट् uses ति (पठति), लृट् uses इष्यति (पठिष्यति), लङ् uses अ-पठत्. Students often mix the past and present endings.
  2. Forgetting the अ prefix in the past tense: The past tense (लङ्) of पठ् is अपठत् with the initial अ, not पठत्.
  3. Wrong forms of गम्: The root गम् becomes गच्छ in the present (गच्छति), but गमिष्यति in the future and अगच्छत् in the past. Learn each tense separately.
  4. Mixing दा and दृश्: दा (give) becomes ददाति; दृश् (see) becomes पश्यति. Do not confuse these roots and their forms.
  5. Wrong agreement: The verb must agree with the subject — रामः पठति but ते पठन्ति. A singular subject cannot take a plural verb.
  6. Forgetting the special verb अस्: अस्ति, स्तः, सन्ति are the forms of अस्. Students often write भवति everywhere and lose marks.
  7. Skipping the dual: The dual forms (पठतः, पठथः, पठावः) are asked in exams; never skip them in the table.

Exam Tips

  1. Learn the nine forms of पठ् in लट्: पठति, पठतः, पठन्ति; पठसि, पठथः, पठथ; पठामि, पठावः, पठामः.
  2. Practise converting tenses: Change पठति (present) to पठिष्यति (future) and अपठत् (past) - this is a common question.
  3. Memorise the common roots table: पठ्-पठति, गम्-गच्छति, भव्-भवति, कृ-करोति, दा-ददाति, दृश्-पश्यति.
  4. Learn अस्ति family: अस्ति, स्तः, सन्ति; असि, स्थः, स्थ; अस्मि, स्वः, स्मः — the most asked verb.
  5. Write full tables: In धातुरूप questions, give all nine forms with person and number labels for full marks.
  6. Use the verb in sentences: Practise "रामः पठति" and "वयं पठामः" so agreement becomes natural.

Conclusion

धातुरूपाणि is the heart of Sanskrit verbs. Every action word comes from a root (धातुः), and each root takes different forms according to the tense (लट्, लृट्, लङ्, लोट्, विधिलिङ्), the person and the number. The chapter presents the conjugations of the common roots — पठ्, गम्, भव्, कृ, दा, दृश्, वद्, लिख् — and the special verb अस्. With the nine forms of each tense learned by heart and daily practice, a student can translate sentences and answer grammar questions correctly. Students who master the tense endings, the common root forms and the अस्ति family will score full marks in every धातुरूप question.
