Chapter 10 of the NCERT Class 10 Sanskrit textbook "शेमुषी" (Shemushi) is called नवमः अध्यायः, which means "The Ninth Chapter". The title is simply the Sanskrit name for the ninth lesson of the book (नवमः = ninth, अध्यायः = chapter). This chapter is a short poem-lesson (पद्यम्) that carries a beautiful and practical message about life. Its main theme is that nothing in this world is achieved without effort — सफलता (success) comes only to those who work hard, use time well, and keep learning. The lesson uses simple Sanskrit verses to teach the values of diligence (परिश्रमः), knowledge (विद्या), truthful conduct (सत्यम्) and the right use of time (समयः). It tells the student that talent without practice is useless, that every moment lost never returns, and that a person who keeps studying and working honestly always rises in life. Because the chapter is written in verse form, it gives excellent practice in reading poetry, finding the message of a verse, translating it into English, and analysing the grammar of compounds, sandhi and verb forms. This note explains the poem in English, gives word meanings and grammar, and provides revision tables, a mind map, SVG diagrams, common mistakes and exam tips.
Sanskrit idea: श्रमेण विना न किमपि सिध्यति — nothing is accomplished without effort. Meaning: A farmer who does not plough his field cannot get a good harvest; a student who does not study cannot pass; a sportsperson who does not practise cannot win. Success is the child of hard work. The verse teaches that wishing and dreaming are not enough — we must act.
Sanskrit idea: समयः अतिबहुमूल्यः — time is very precious. Meaning: The time that has gone can never come back, just as an arrow shot from a bow never returns. Therefore every moment of our youth should be used for study, service and good deeds. A lazy student who wastes today's time regrets it for the rest of his life.
Sanskrit idea: विद्यार्थिनः गुणाः — the qualities of a student. Meaning: A good student rises early, studies regularly, respects the teacher (गुरुः), asks questions, practises daily, keeps good company and uses time wisely. Like a bee that collects nectar from many flowers, a student should gather knowledge from every book and every teacher.
Sanskrit idea: अभ्यासेन विना नैव ज्ञानम् — without practice there is no skill. Meaning: Just as a dancer becomes perfect only by daily practice, and a musician by daily singing, so a student becomes learned only by daily revision. Practice (अभ्यासः) makes a person perfect in everything.
Sanskrit idea: सत्येन धर्मेण च सर्वं लभ्यते — everything is gained by truth and virtue. Meaning: A person who speaks the truth, helps others and lives honestly is respected everywhere. Such a person may lose money, but never loses honour (यशः). The verse teaches that good conduct is the real wealth of life.
