However, the forest and wildlife resources of India are under serious threat. The expansion of agriculture, industry, infrastructure and human settlements has destroyed natural habitats, and many species are endangered or threatened. This chapter examines the extent of forest and wildlife resources in India, the causes of their depletion, and the measures taken to conserve them.

Forests and wildlife are not just resources to be exploited; they are part of a complex ecosystem on which human life depends. Forests regulate the climate, protect the soil, provide water and habitat, and support the livelihoods of millions of people, especially tribal and forest-dwelling communities. 2. Flora and Fauna in India

India has an enormous variety of flora and fauna. There are about 47,000 plant species in India, of which about 15,000 are flowering plants, and about 89,000 species of animals. Rare species are those with small populations in the world and are at risk, such as the Himalayan brown bear, the wild Asiatic buffalo, the desert fox and the hornbill. Endemic species are those found only in some particular areas, usually isolated by natural or geographical barriers, such as the Andaman teal, the Nicobar pigeon and the mithun in Arunachal Pradesh. Extinct species are those that are not found after extensive searches of known or likely areas, such as the Asiatic cheetah.

This classification helps in identifying the species that need priority attention for conservation. The IUCN categories are used worldwide to monitor the status of species and to guide conservation policy. Students should be able to give at least one example of each category and understand why a species may move from one category to another, for instance, from vulnerable to endangered, if the threats to its survival increase.

4. Negative Factors Leading to the Depletion of Flora and Fauna

The depletion of forests and wildlife in India is caused by a combination of factors. Agricultural expansion is a major cause, as forests have been cleared for cultivation. The expansion of the railways, the building of roads and dams, the growth of industries and the development of infrastructure have all encroached upon forest land. Mining has also caused severe damage to forests and the ecosystems around them. Human settlements and urbanisation have further reduced the natural habitats of wildlife.

Hunting and poaching are serious threats to wildlife. 5. Conservation of Forest and Wildlife in India

The Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act was implemented in 1972, under which several projects for the protection of specific endangered species were launched. The tropical evergreen forests are found in the areas with high rainfall, such as the Western Ghats and the northeastern states, and they remain green throughout the year. The tropical deciduous forests, also called monsoon forests, are found in areas with moderate rainfall, and they shed their leaves in the dry season; these are the most widespread forests in India.

Thorn forests and scrubs are found in the arid and semi-arid regions with low rainfall, such as Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat. Montane forests are found in the mountainous regions, and they include the coniferous forests of the Himalayas. Mangrove forests are found in the tidal regions of the deltas, such as the Sundarbans, and they are adapted to the saline conditions of the coastal wetlands. The northeastern states, the Andaman and Nicobar islands and parts of the Western Ghats have dense forests, while the central and western parts of India have scattered and degraded forests. 7. Community and Conservation

The conservation of forests and wildlife cannot be achieved without the involvement of local communities. Historically, the forests were used by the local communities for their livelihood, and the colonial state took over the management of forests, restricting the rights of the people. After independence, the forests continued to be managed by the state, and the rights of the forest-dwelling communities were often ignored. The Chipko movement, which began in the 1970s in the Himalayan region, was a powerful example of community participation in conservation.
