A digital footprint is the trail of data we leave behind whenever we use digital devices and services. Every search, post, message, purchase and location update contributes to this footprint. Because these traces are persistent, searchable and often public, understanding them is essential for protecting privacy and reputation. A careless post made today can affect university admissions, job offers and relationships years later.

The chapter also introduces the concept of a digital society, where citizens interact, transact and even vote online.
