The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late eighteenth century, was one of the most far-reaching transformations in human history. It changed the way goods were produced, moving from hand production in homes and workshops to machine production in factories. The Industrial Revolution was not a sudden event but a long process of change that accelerated from about 1780 in Britain. Britain had many advantages: abundant coal and iron, a large labour supply, a growing market, colonial trade, a stable government and a tradition of enterprise. The inventions of the age — in textiles, iron and steam power — multiplied the productive capacity of labour many times over.
The effects of industrialisation were double-edged. It created immense wealth, cheaper goods and new opportunities, but it also produced terrible conditions of life and work for the new industrial labour force. The rise of the factory, the growth of industrial towns, child labour, the Luddite protests and the emergence of working-class movements are all part of this story. The Industrial Revolution also transformed the global economy, as industrial powers sought raw materials and markets across the world.
Several factors combined to make Britain the pioneer of industrialisation. Britain possessed vast deposits of coal and iron ore, the two essential raw materials of the industrial age. Coal fuelled the steam engines and the ironworks; iron provided the material for machines, rails and bridges. The country's rivers and canals, and later its railways, provided transport for raw materials and finished goods.
Britain also had a growing population and labour force. The agricultural changes of the eighteenth century — the enclosure movement — displaced many small farmers, who migrated to towns seeking work. Overseas trade and colonial possessions supplied raw materials such as cotton and provided markets for British goods. Britain's political stability and a legal system that protected property encouraged investment and enterprise.
Finally, Britain had a culture of invention and entrepreneurship. Engineers, craftsmen and businessmen experimented continuously to improve machines and increase production. Government policy generally supported trade and industry. By the late eighteenth century, all these conditions combined to produce a sustained take-off in industrial production.
The textile industry was the first to be transformed. For centuries, cloth was spun and woven by hand in homes. In the 1730s, John Kay's flying shuttle speeded up weaving. Then a series of spinning inventions increased the supply of yarn: James Hargreaves invented the spinning jenny (around 1764), which could spin several threads at once; Richard Arkwright developed the water frame (1769), a larger machine driven by water power; and Samuel Crompton's spinning mule combined their advantages.
Weaving was speeded up by Edmund Cartwright's power loom (1785). These machines were too large and expensive for home use, so they were housed in factories, usually built near rivers to use water power. The factory system brought workers together under one roof, with machines and a disciplined division of labour — a decisive break from the older domestic system.
The demand for machines and power led to improvements in iron and steam. The steam engine, perfected by James Watt in the 1760s-1780s, provided a reliable source of power that no longer depended on the location of rivers. Steam power was applied to cotton mills, mines, and later to railways and ships, transforming transport as well as industry.
The iron industry grew rapidly as new techniques improved production. In 1709, Abraham Darby discovered a method of smelting iron using coke from coal instead of charcoal, solving the problem of dwindling timber supplies. Later improvements, such as the puddling process developed by Henry Cort, produced stronger and more malleable iron (wrought iron). British iron production multiplied, supplying rails, bridges, ships and machinery.
Coal was the fuel of the industrial age. It powered steam engines, smelted iron and heated homes. Coal mines grew deeper and more dangerous, worked by men, women and children in harsh conditions. The steam engine itself was first used to pump water out of mines, enabling deeper shafts to be dug.
James Watt's improvements to the steam engine (patented 1769, perfected in the 1780s) created a compact, efficient engine that could drive machinery of all kinds. Steam power freed industry from rivers and water wheels. In 1804, the first steam locomotive ran in Wales, and from 1825 railways began to spread, culminating in the great age of rail travel in the nineteenth century. The combination of coal, iron and steam created the industrial economy.
The factory was the central institution of the Industrial Revolution. Factories concentrated workers, machinery and power under one roof, imposed strict discipline and long hours, and divided work into specialised tasks. Factory owners controlled the pace of work; the clock, rather than the seasons, regulated the day. Child labour was common, as children were cheap and their small hands suited to many tasks.
Industrialisation created a new landscape. Small villages such as Manchester grew into great industrial cities. Workers' housing was crowded and insanitary; smoke from chimneys polluted the air; rivers were contaminated by waste. Public health deteriorated, and epidemics of typhoid and cholera were common. Reformers and governments gradually responded with factory acts regulating hours and conditions, beginning with the Factory Act of 1833 in Britain.
The industrial working class was a new social group, distinct from both peasants and traditional artisans. Workers organised for better conditions. In the 1810s, the Luddites smashed machines they believed were destroying their livelihoods. Later, the Chartist movement demanded political rights for workers, and trade unions were legalised and grew. The social questions raised by industrialisation — poverty, unemployment, inequality — shaped the politics of the nineteenth century.
The Industrial Revolution transformed Britain's place in the world. Britain became the "workshop of the world", exporting cotton cloth, machinery and other goods, and importing raw materials such as cotton, wool and food. Cheap British goods undermined handicraft industries in many countries, including India, whose textile industry declined sharply.
The new industrial powers competed for colonies, raw materials and markets. The Atlantic trade and colonial empires supplied the cotton and markets that British industry needed. The global division of labour — industrial nations in the West, primary producers elsewhere — took shape during this period. Ideas too travelled: socialism, capitalism and the analysis of industrial society by thinkers such as Adam Smith and Karl Marx emerged from this transformation.
By the mid-nineteenth century, industrialisation had begun to spread to other countries — France, Germany, the United States and later Japan. The Industrial Revolution thus marks the beginning of the modern industrial world, with its characteristic features of economic growth, urbanisation, technological change and social conflict.
