The discipline has also evolved through different philosophical perspectives. The welfare approach, developed in the 1970s, emphasised the well-being of people and the reduction of inequality. The radical approach, influenced by Marxist ideas, criticised capitalist society and focused on exploitation and class struggle. Later, the behavioural approach concentrated on the decision-making process of individuals, while the humanistic approach, inspired by the work of geographers like Yi-Fu Tuan, focused on the subjective experiences and feelings of people about places.

5. Human Geography and Physical Geography

Human geography and physical geography are not separate; they are complementary halves of the same discipline. Physical geography provides the natural background within which human activities occur, while human geography shows how humans transform this natural background. For example, a river valley is a landform studied by physical geography, but the settlements, agriculture and industries developed along the river are studied by human geography.

The interaction between nature and humans creates what are called "humanised" or cultural landscapes. Over time, humans have converted natural landscapes into cultural landscapes through activities such as farming, building cities and constructing roads. This interplay makes human geography a truly synthetic discipline, because it borrows concepts from sociology, economics, history and political science, and applies them to spatial questions.

6. Growth and Development of Human Geography

Human geography has grown from a descriptive subject into an analytical and applied science. In the early phase, it was largely descriptive, recording the distribution of peoples and activities. With time, geographers began to search for explanations and general laws, making the subject more scientific. The quantitative revolution in the mid-twentieth century introduced statistical methods, models and theories, such as Christaller's Central Place Theory and Weber's location theory.

In recent decades, the subject has embraced contemporary issues like environmental degradation, globalisation, sustainable development, gender inequality and climate change. The development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and the Global Positioning System (GPS) has revolutionised the way human geography data is collected and analysed. Today, human geography plays a crucial role in planning, regional development, disaster management and policy making.
