1. Introduction

The Harappan Civilisation, also known as the Indus Valley Civilisation, is one of the oldest and most remarkable urban cultures of the ancient world. It flourished in the basins of the Indus river and its tributaries, extending into parts of present-day Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and even western Uttar Pradesh. Chronologically, it is divided into the Early Harappan (c. 5500-2600 BCE), the Mature Harappan (c. 2600-1900 BCE) and the Late Harappan (c. 1900-1300 BCE) phases. What makes this civilisation so significant for historians is that it was an entirely indigenous, non-kingly and remarkably well-planned urban society whose origins cannot be traced to any earlier known civilisation.

The chapter draws its title from the three most durable categories of material evidence left behind by the Harappans: the bricks that built their cities, the beads that signified craft and trade, and the bones that reveal their dietary habits, crafts and even ritual practices. The study of these material remains is what archaeologists call the study of "material culture." Because the Harappan script remains undeciphered, our understanding of the civilisation depends almost entirely on archaeology, with all its interpretations and limitations. This is why the chapter repeatedly warns students to distinguish between what archaeology can prove and what is merely speculation.

2. The Discovery and Extent of the Civilisation

The civilisation was first brought to notice in the 1920s when John Marshall, the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), announced the discovery of Harappa and Mohenjodaro. Both were existing mound sites that had been damaged by British engineers who used the ancient bricks as railway ballast for the Lahore-Multan railway line. Despite this loss, systematic excavation revealed two of the most important urban centres of the civilisation.

The total area of the civilisation was vast, covering roughly 1.5 million square kilometres, far larger than either Egypt or Mesopotamia. Its northernmost site is Manda in Jammu, the easternmost is Alamgirpur in Uttar Pradesh, the westernmost is Sutkagendor in Baluchistan, and the southernmost is Daimabad in Maharashtra. More than 1,400 sites are known, of which about a hundred have been excavated. Important sites include Chanhudaro (known as the "city of the beads"), Lothal (a port town with a dockyard), Dholavira (which had a unique water reservoir system and inscriptions), Kalibangan, Banawali, Rakhigarhi and Harappa. The chapter emphasises that only about three per cent of the sites have been excavated, so our knowledge is still partial and can change with new evidence.

3. Major Centres and the Grid-Planned Cities

The major cities of the Harappan civilisation reveal an extraordinary degree of town planning. Harappa, Mohenjodaro and Dholavira were all planned cities built on a grid system, oriented almost precisely along the cardinal directions, north-south and east-west. The most distinctive feature was the division of the city into an upper "citadel" and a lower town. The citadel, built on raised ground or mud-brick platforms, housed structures of importance such as granaries, public buildings and possibly ritual structures, while the lower town contained the residential dwellings of the ordinary people.

The streets cut each other at right angles, dividing the city into blocks. This careful, deliberate planning was based on standardised baked bricks of a fixed ratio, 4:2:1, in length, breadth and height. Such standardisation suggests an extremely strong and centralised authority that could enforce building regulations across a vast region. In Mohenjodaro, the lower town walls, the elaborate drainage system and the careful placement of houses on either side of the streets all point to a municipal consciousness rarely found in ancient cities. The Great Bath of Mohenjodaro, a large rectangular tank, and the impressive Granaries are among the most striking public monuments.

4. The Great Bath and the Drainage System

The Great Bath at Mohenjodaro is a watertight rectangular tank built of baked bricks, lined with a thick layer of bitumen (natural tar) to prevent seepage. It was surrounded by corridors and rooms on all sides, with steps descending into the water. The water was probably drawn from a well in an adjacent room and drained out through an outlet after use. Some historians speculate that it was used for ritual bathing, but this remains a hypothesis, not a proven fact.

Equally impressive is the drainage system, which the historian Shereen Ratnagar called one of the civilisation's greatest achievements. Almost every house in Mohenjodaro had its own bathroom and a drain that connected to a covered street drain running beneath the lanes. These street drains were built of bricks laid in mortar and had manholes at regular intervals, allowing them to be cleaned. The drains sloped so that waste water flowed away efficiently. This concern for sanitation was unique in the ancient world and testifies to a sophisticated municipal authority.

5. Craft Production, Beads and Seals

The chapter's second "bead" in the title points to the civilisation's spectacular craft traditions. Beads were made from a wide range of materials including carnelian, jasper, crystal, quartz, steatite, copper, bronze, gold and faience. The techniques used were sophisticated. Steatite, a soft stone, was carved and then baked to hardness. Nodules of carnelian were heated to change their colour from dull red to a brilliant red, a technique used even today by beadmakers in Khambat (Cambay), Gujarat.

The "city of the beads," Chanhudaro, was devoted entirely to craft production, including bead making, shell working, metalwork and seal making. Seals are among the most distinctive Harappan artefacts. The most common type is the square steatite seal with an animal motif and a short inscription. The most famous is the "Pashupati seal" showing a figure seated in a yogic posture surrounded by animals, which some scholars, without firm proof, identify with the deity Shiva. Seals were probably used for long-distance trade to mark ownership of goods, since they were often found with weights and measures.

6. Weights, Measures and Trade

The Harappans used a highly standardised system of weights based on a ratio of 1:2:4:8:16:32 and so on up to 12,800, with the smallest common weight being roughly 1.13 grams. Cubical chert weights formed the basis. These cubical weights were made of chert, a hard stone, and follow a binary ratio system, showing an advanced mathematical understanding. The discovery of these weights at sites far apart confirms a common system across the civilisation.

Trade was carried out both within the subcontinent and beyond. Materials like carnelian and shell were brought to production centres, while finished goods were exported. The Mesopotamian records of the third millennium BCE mention trade with a region they called Meluhha, which scholars generally identify with the Harappan world. The port of Lothal had a dockyard, and other coastal sites such as Sutkagendor and Allahdino suggest maritime trade. The Harappans did not know iron, but they used bronze made from copper and tin, and gold and silver for ornaments.

7. Food Production and the Story of Bones

The third "bone" of the title directs attention to diet and environment. Terracotta models of the plough have been found at Banawali and Cholistan, and fields were laid out in a grid pattern. The Harappans grew wheat, barley, millets, pulses, sesame, mustard and rice (rice cultivation was practised in some areas), and also harvested cotton, making them one of the first civilisations to use cotton cloth.

The study of animal bones recovered from sites reveals a great deal about diet and hunting. Archaeo-zoologists can identify whether a bone is from a wild or a domestic animal, and can even tell the age and sex of the animal at slaughter. At sites like Mohenjodaro, bones of cattle, sheep, goat, buffalo and pig were found, along with remains of wild animals such as the boar, deer and gharial. Patterns of bone fragments show how animals were butchered and cooked. The Harappans also ate fish and birds. Plant remains, however, are rarely preserved, and archaeologists often use methods such as collecting seeds through flotation to recover them.

8. A House of Evidence: Mohenjodaro

To understand how archaeologists interpret a single structure, the chapter uses the example of a house at Mohenjodaro excavated by Ernest Mackay. The house had several rooms around a courtyard, a kitchen, and a bathroom, but no windows facing the street, suggesting the street was used for drainage and traffic. A staircase was found, indicating the existence of a second storey or a flat roof. The courtyard with its well would have been a source of light and air.

This courtyard-centred plan is characteristic of Harappan houses. Yet Mackay's interpretation that the lower town "contained only priests and scribes" was quickly shown to be wrong when later evidence revealed that the lower town was densely populated with ordinary houses. The example teaches students a crucial lesson: an archaeologist's interpretation can change when more data becomes available, and every excavation adds to or corrects our knowledge.

9. Seals, Script and a Societ Without a King

The Harappan script is found on seals, copper tablets, pottery and rare inscriptions, the longest running to about 17 signs. It has about 375 to 400 signs, far too many for a purely alphabetic script. The script is written from right to left, as shown by the spacing of signs and occasional overflow onto the reverse side. Because it remains undeciphered, we cannot know the Harappan language, and all interpretations of the civilisation's politics and religion remain provisional.

The absence of any obvious royal burials, palaces or elaborate tombs, and the striking uniformity of material culture, has led scholars to debate whether the Harappan society was egalitarian. Some scholars, such as Gregory Possehl, argue that there was no single ruler but perhaps a coalition of rulers. Others suggest that there was an elite. The point to remember is that we do not know: the "priest-king" steatite bust from Mohenjodaro and the "Dancing Girl" bronze statue simply show that art flourished and that some people enjoyed higher status.

10. The End of the Civilisation

The decline of the Mature Harappan culture began around 1900 BCE. The archaeological evidence points to a series of changes rather than a single catastrophe. At Mohenjodaro, flood deposits suggest repeated flooding. At Dholavira and Kalibangan, the large cities were gradually abandoned, and at many sites the fine pottery, beads and seals disappear, replaced by poorer, coarser materials. The number of settlements declined, and the civilisation "collapsed" gradually into the Late Harappan phase.

Early scholars blamed an Aryan invasion, but there is no archaeological evidence for such a conquest, and this theory has now been discarded. The more likely causes were environmental and economic: the drying up of rivers, the possible drying of the Ghaggar-Hakra system, ecological degradation caused by overuse of resources, changing river courses, and a breakdown of the long-distance trade networks that sustained the cities. Whatever the precise cause, the urban culture faded into a more rural and simpler way of life.

Common Mistakes

  1. Confusing the phases: students often write the Mature Harappan period as c. 2600-1900 CE instead of BCE. Always use BCE for the Harappan period.
  2. Claiming the Harappans knew iron: the civilisation used copper and bronze, not iron, which came much later.
  3. Identifying the "Pashupati seal" as definitely depicting Shiva: this is only a hypothesis of scholars and is not proven.

As historians say, the Harappan past is a civilisation we can see, but not yet fully hear.
