The first chapter of Class 6 Sanskrit (Ruchira) is titled शब्द परिचयः १ (Shabda Parichayah 1), which means "Introduction to Words 1." This is the very first step of the journey into the Sanskrit language. In this chapter, we learn basic Sanskrit vocabulary that we use in everyday life, especially words related to people, family members, and pronouns. The chapter teaches us both masculine (पुल्लिङ्ग) and feminine (स्त्रीलिङ्ग) nouns. It also introduces us to the first-person pronoun अहम् (I) and the second-person pronoun त्वम् (You). The goal of this lesson is not to learn heavy grammar but to build a small word-bank that will become the foundation for all future chapters. Sanskrit is a highly systematic language, and learning words with their genders is the first essential step. Every noun in Sanskrit belongs to a gender: masculine (पुल्लिङ्ग), feminine (स्त्रीलिङ्ग), or neuter (नपुंसकलिङ्ग). This chapter primarily focuses on masculine and feminine nouns. We also learn how to say simple sentences like "I am a boy" (अहं बालकः अस्मि) and "You are a girl" (त्वं बालिका असि).
2. The Words Introduced in the Lesson
The chapter introduces several basic words. Let us divide them into three groups: masculine nouns, feminine nouns, and pronouns.
2.1 Masculine Nouns (पुल्लिङ्ग शब्दः)
नरः (Narah) - Man
बालकः (Balakah) - Boy
पिता (Pita) - Father
भ्राता (Bhrata) - Brother
पुत्रः (Putrah) - Son
अस्मद् (Asmad) - the base of "I" and "we"
2.2 Feminine Nouns (स्त्रीलिङ्ग शब्दः)
नारी (Nari) - Woman
बालिका (Balika) - Girl
माता (Mata) - Mother
भगिनी (Bhagini) - Sister
पुत्री (Putri) - Daughter
2.3 Pronouns (सर्वनामानि)
अहम् (Aham) - I
त्वम् (Twam) - You (singular)
सः (Sah) - He / That (masculine)
सा (Sa) - She / That (feminine)
3. Sentence Patterns in the Lesson
The lesson teaches simple "I am" and "You are" sentences using the verb अस्मि (I am) and असि (you are). These are forms of the root verb √अस् (as - to be).
3.1 "I am" Sentences (अहं ... अस्मि)
अहं बालकः अस्मि। - I am a boy.
अहं छात्रः अस्मि। - I am a student (male).
अहं बालिका अस्मि। - I am a girl.
अहं पुत्रः अस्मि। - I am a son.
3.2 "You are" Sentences (त्वं ... असि)
त्वं बालकः असि। - You are a boy.
त्वं बालिका असि। - You are a girl.
त्वं नरः असि। - You are a man.
त्वं नारी असि। - You are a woman.
3.3 The Verb अस् (to be) - Present Tense
Person
Singular (एकवचन)
Meaning
First (उत्तमपुरुष)
अस्मि
I am
Second (मध्यमपुरुष)
असि
You are
Third (प्रथमपुरुष)
अस्ति
He/She/It is
In this chapter, we mainly use अस्मि and असि. Later chapters will add अस्ति.
4. Grammar Points (Vyakaran)
4.1 Gender of Nouns (लिङ्गम्)
Every Sanskrit noun has a gender. In this chapter:
- Nouns ending in -अः (like नरः, बालकः) are generally masculine (पुल्लिङ्ग).
- Nouns ending in -आ (like बालिका, नारी) are generally feminine (स्त्रीलिङ्ग).
- Nouns like पिता, माता use a special form. पिता (father) is masculine, and माता (mother) is feminine, even though both end in -आ.
4.2 Special Nouns ending in आ
The words पिता (father) and माता (mother) are special. Their nominative singular form ends in -आ:
- पिता (father) - masculine
- माता (mother) - feminine
- भ्राता (brother) - masculine
- भगिनी (sister) - feminine
4.3 The Pronoun "अहम्" and Verb Agreement
The verb अस्मि always pairs with the pronoun अहम्. The verb असि always pairs with त्वम्. This is called verb-subject agreement (कर्ता-क्रिया सम्बन्ध). The ending of the verb changes according to the person of the subject.

Diagram 2: Verb Agreement with Pronouns
Common Mistakes
Wrong verb with अहम्: Students often write अहं बालकः असि। This is wrong. With अहम् we must always use अस्मि, not असि.
Mixing genders: Writing अहं नारी अस्मि (I am a woman) for a boy. A boy should say अहं बालकः अस्मि. Gender must match the speaker or the noun.
Spelling of बालिका: Students often write बालीका instead of बालिका. The correct spelling has इ before क, not ई.
Calling पिता feminine: Because पिता ends in -आ, students mistakenly treat it as feminine. पिता (father) is always masculine, and माता (mother) is feminine.
Using अस्ति for "I am": Some students use अस्ति for all persons. अस्ति is only for third person (he/she/it). For "I am" use अस्मि.
Confusing सः and सा: सः means he, सा means she. Using सा for a man is wrong.
Forgetting the full stop (।): Sanskrit sentences end with the danda (।), not with a regular English period.
Wrong transliteration: Writing "balik" instead of बालिका. Always write the complete word with its ending.
Exam Tips
Memorise the word list: This chapter is word-heavy. Make flashcards of all ten nouns and the four pronouns.
Learn the verb table: The three forms अस्मि, असि, अस्ति must be memorised perfectly - they appear in every chapter of the book.
Practise translation both ways: From Sanskrit to English and from English to Sanskrit. E.g., "You are a girl" = त्वं बालिका असि।
Pay attention to sentence-ending danda: Always end Sanskrit sentences with । and punctuate correctly.
Frame your own sentences: Create five sentences of your own using अहम् and त्वम्. This prepares you for sentence-making questions in exams.
Learn gender endings: Understand the pattern -अः (masculine) and -आ (feminine) so you can guess genders of new words.
In one-mark questions: The examiner usually asks the meaning of a word or a verb form. Be ready to identify the correct verb form for a given pronoun.
Conclusion
Shabda Parichayah 1 is the gateway to the Sanskrit language. In this chapter we learnt ten basic nouns - five masculine and five feminine - along with the four important pronouns and the present-tense forms of the verb अस्. We understood that Sanskrit words have genders and that the verb must agree with its subject. The sentence patterns अहं ... अस्मि and त्वं ... असि allow us to introduce ourselves and others. This simple foundation will be used in every subsequent chapter. Master this chapter thoroughly - memorise the word list, the gender rules, and the verb forms - and you will find the rest of the book much easier. Practice speaking these small sentences aloud every day, and Sanskrit will become a familiar and friendly language.
