1. Introduction

The second chapter of Class 6 Sanskrit (Ruchira) is titled शब्द परिचयः २ (Shabda Parichayah 2), which means "Introduction to Words 2." While the first chapter taught words about people and family, this chapter extends our vocabulary to the world around us. Here we learn the names of objects in the classroom and at home, words for everyday items, and we meet the third-person pronouns in more detail. This chapter introduces neuter gender (नपुंसकलिङ्ग) nouns for the first time, along with more masculine and feminine words. It also introduces the concept of number (वचनम्) - singular (एकवचन) and plural (बहुवचन). Learning the difference between one thing and many things is a crucial step. We also learn to use words like एतत् (this) and see how nouns change when they are plural. By the end of this chapter, the student should be able to name common objects around the house and school, identify their genders, and form simple sentences describing what something is.

2. The Words Introduced in the Lesson

The vocabulary in this chapter includes objects commonly found in our surroundings. Let us categorise them by gender.

2.1 Masculine Nouns (पुल्लिङ्ग शब्दः)

2.2 Feminine Nouns (स्त्रीलिङ्ग शब्दः)

2.3 Neuter Nouns (नपुंसकलिङ्ग शब्दः)

2.4 Pronouns and Determiners

3. The Concept of Number (वचनम्)

Sanskrit nouns and verbs exist in three numbers: - एकवचन (Ekavachana) - Singular: one thing, e.g., फलम् (a fruit), गजः (an elephant) - द्विवचन (Dvivachana) - Dual: exactly two things (studied in higher classes) - बहुवचन (Bahuvachana) - Plural: more than two things

3.1 Making Plurals

Singular Plural Meaning
गजः गजाः elephants
फलम् फलानि fruits
पुष्पम् पुष्पाणि flowers
बालकः बालकाः boys

3.2 Plural Verb Forms

With plural subjects we use the plural verb सन्ति (they are) instead of अस्ति (he/she/it is): - फलानि सन्ति। - There are fruits. - गजाः सन्ति। - There are elephants. - बालिकाः सन्ति। - There are girls.

4. Grammar Points (Vyakaran)

4.1 Gender Recognition

4.2 The Neuter Gender (नपुंसकलिङ्ग)

Neuter nouns ending in -म् are new in this chapter. They describe inanimate objects like water (जलम्), fruit (फलम्), and book (पुस्तकम्). The word "this" for neuter is एतत् or इदम्.

4.3 Third-Person Pronouns

4.4 The Verb अस् (to be) - Complete Present Tense

Person Singular Plural
First (I/We) अस्मि स्मः
Second (You) असि स्थ
Third (He/She/It/They) अस्ति सन्ति

In this chapter the important new form is सन्ति (they are).

5. Word Meanings (शब्दार्थः)

Important Diagrams (SVG)

Diagram 1: Gender Classification with "This" Pronouns

Genders and the "This" Pronoun Masculine (एषः) Feminine (एषा) Neuter (एतत्) गजः - elephant सिंहः - lion अश्वः - horse विद्या - knowledge शिक्षिका - teacher बालिका - girl फलम् - fruit जलम् - water दुग्धम् - milk एषः गजः अस्ति। This is an elephant. एषा बालिका अस्ति। This is a girl. एतत् फलम् अस्ति। This is a fruit. Golden Rule Use एषः for masculine, एषा for feminine, and एतत् for neuter "this".

Diagram 2: Singular and Plural Numbers

Number (वचनम्) - Singular and Plural एकवचन (Singular) बहुवचन (Plural) फलम् जलम् फलानि फलानि फलानि एतत् फलम् अस्ति। फलानि सन्ति। Singular noun → अस्ति Plural noun → सन्ति Golden Rule: With a singular subject use अस्ति; with a plural subject use सन्ति.

Common Mistakes

  1. Wrong plural formation: Writing फलम् as plural instead of फलानि. Masculine nouns in -अः become -आः (गजाः) and neuter nouns in -म् become -आनि (फलानि) in the plural.
  2. Using अस्ति with plural subjects: Students write गजाः अस्ति। This is wrong. With a plural subject we must use सन्ति.
  3. Mixing up एषः, एषा, एतत्: Using एषः for a fruit. Since फलम् is neuter, we must say एतत् फलम्, not एषः फलम्.
  4. Treating neuter words as masculine: Calling जलम् (water) masculine. Words ending in -म् are neuter.
  5. Confusing कपिः and कपित्: The correct word for monkey is कपिः, not कपि.
  6. Wrong spelling of पुष्पम्: Writing पुष्पम instead of पुष्पम्. The word must end with the anusvara (म्).
  7. Translating विद्या as 'widow': विद्या means knowledge, not widow. Sound-alike confusion in English must be avoided.
  8. Using plural verb for a single item: Saying फलं सन्ति for "there is a fruit". Singular subject needs singular verb अस्ति.

Exam Tips

  1. Learn the gender endings: -अः (masculine), -आ (feminine), -म् (neuter). This quick rule solves most gender questions.
  2. Memorise the plural forms: Especially neuter plurals in -आनि (फलानि, पुष्पाणि, जलानि) as examiners love to ask these.
  3. Practice matching verb to number: Remember that one thing → अस्ति, many things → सन्ति.
  4. Write example sentences: For each gender, remember one full sentence with the correct "this" pronoun: एषः गजः अस्ति, एषा बालिका अस्ति, एतत् फलम् अस्ति.
  5. Use the word list for one-mark questions: Word meanings from this chapter (animal names, objects) are very commonly asked.
  6. Learn the full verb table of अस्: Know अस्मि, असि, अस्ति (singular) and स्मः, स्थ, सन्ति (plural) - all six forms.
  7. Check the danda: Always end sentences with the Sanskrit full stop । in translation questions.

Conclusion

Shabda Parichayah 2 expanded our Sanskrit vocabulary from people to the wider world - animals, objects, and concepts. We learnt three genders of nouns, with the neuter gender (नपुंसकलिङ्ग) being a completely new idea. We also discovered the concept of number: singular (एकवचन) and plural (बहुवचन), and the plural verb form सन्ति. The "this" pronouns एषः, एषा, एतत् allow us to point at things and describe them. With the ability to say "This is an elephant" (एषः गजः अस्ति) and "There are fruits" (फलानि सन्ति), we have taken a big step forward in constructing meaningful Sanskrit sentences. Practise the noun forms, the plural endings, and the verb table regularly. This vocabulary and grammar will be the foundation for reading actual stories and passages in the later lessons of the book.
