2. What is a Fibre?

The cotton plant bears soft, fluffy bolls that contain cotton fibres. These bolls are picked from the plants, and the seeds are separated from the fibres by a process called ginning.

4. Animal Fibres: Wool

The process of obtaining wool from sheep involves several steps: 1. Shearing: The fleece (hair) of the sheep is removed using a machine, like cutting hair. 2. Scouring: The sheared wool is washed thoroughly to remove dust, dirt, and grease. 3. Sorting: The cleaned wool is sorted according to quality. 4. Combing: The wool is combed to remove tangles and make the fibres straight. 5. Spinning: The fibres are twisted into yarn, which is then woven or knitted into fabric.

Wool is warm because the fibres trap air in small pockets, and air is a poor conductor of heat. This trapped air prevents our body heat from escaping, keeping us warm in winter. Wool is used to make sweaters, shawls, blankets, socks, and coats.

5. Animal Fibres: Silk

Silk is called the "queen of fibres" because of its softness, shine, and strength. Silk is obtained from the cocoon of the silkworm. The silkworm is the caterpillar of the silk moth. The rearing of silkworms for the production of silk is called sericulture.

The process of obtaining silk involves the following steps: 1. Rearing silkworms: Female silk moths lay eggs on mulberry leaves. The eggs hatch into caterpillars (silkworms). 2. Feeding: The silkworms eat mulberry leaves and grow rapidly. 3. Making cocoons: When fully grown, the silkworm secretes a fine, continuous thread of silk from its body and wraps itself in a cocoon. 4. Reeling: The cocoons are collected, and the silk thread is carefully unwound. This is called reeling. 5. Spinning and weaving: Several threads are twisted together to make strong yarn, which is then woven into silk fabric.

Silkworms that feed on mulberry leaves produce the finest silk, which is called mulberry silk. Silk is used to make sarees, dresses, ties, and many decorative items. Silk production gives employment to many people, especially in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

6. Synthetic Fibres

Synthetic fibres are made by humans from chemicals obtained from petroleum products. They are also called artificial or man-made fibres. Some common synthetic fibres are nylon, polyester, rayon, and acrylic.

Synthetic fibres have both advantages and disadvantages. They are strong, durable, and easy to wash, but they do not absorb sweat well, can melt on heating, and take a very long time to rot, causing pollution.

Nylon is very strong. - Comfort: Clothes should be soft and comfortable to wear.
