1. Introduction

Every day, we throw away a lot of things. Vegetable peels, plastic packets, paper, broken toys, and many other materials become garbage. But where does all this garbage go? In this chapter, we follow the journey of garbage from our homes to landfills and understand what happens to it. We also learn why managing garbage properly is so important.

Garbage is of two types: biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Biodegradable wastes are materials that can be broken down by micro-organisms, like vegetable peels and paper. Non-biodegradable wastes cannot be broken down easily, like plastic and glass. This difference is the key to understanding how to deal with garbage.

We also learn about vermicomposting, in which earthworms convert organic waste into compost, and the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. By following these principles, we can reduce the amount of garbage and protect our environment.

2. What is Garbage?

Garbage is the waste material that we throw away. Every household, school, shop, and factory produces garbage. Garbage includes: - Kitchen waste: vegetable peels, fruit skins, food leftovers - Paper and cardboard - Plastic bags and bottles - Glass bottles and broken glass - Metal cans and foil - Old clothes and shoes - Broken toys and furniture

The amount of garbage produced is increasing every day because the human population is growing and we use more packaged products. If garbage is not managed properly, it can cause pollution and disease.

3. Two Types of Garbage: Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable

Garbage can be divided into two main types based on whether micro-organisms can decompose it.

Biodegradable waste: Materials that can be broken down by micro-organisms (bacteria and fungi) into simpler substances are called biodegradable. These materials come from living things. Examples: vegetable peels, fruit skins, food leftovers, paper, cotton, wood, and dry leaves. Biodegradable waste can be turned into compost.

Non-biodegradable waste: Materials that cannot be broken down by micro-organisms are called non-biodegradable. These materials do not decompose easily and remain in the environment for a very long time. Examples: plastic bags, plastic bottles, glass, metal cans, and polythene. Non-biodegradable waste pollutes the environment and is very harmful.

The difference between these two types of garbage decides how they should be disposed of. Biodegradable waste can be converted into useful compost, while non-biodegradable waste should be recycled or reduced.

4. Dealing with Garbage

There are several ways to deal with garbage: - Landfill: Garbage is dumped in low-lying areas called landfills. The biodegradable waste in the landfill rots and turns into soil. However, landfills fill up quickly, and the plastic in them stays for hundreds of years. - Composting: Biodegradable waste is collected and allowed to rot, forming compost. Compost is a rich, dark substance that is used as fertiliser for plants. - Recycling: Non-biodegradable waste like glass, metal, and some plastics is sent to recycling plants where it is converted into new useful products. - Incineration: Some garbage is burnt in special plants. But burning garbage releases harmful smoke and pollutes the air.

The best way is to separate garbage at home and dispose of each type in the right way.

5. Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is a method of making compost with the help of earthworms. In this method, organic (biodegradable) waste like vegetable peels and dry leaves is placed in a pit or a container, and earthworms are added. The earthworms eat the waste and convert it into compost, which is called vermicompost.

Vermicompost is rich in nutrients and is an excellent fertiliser for plants. It improves the quality of the soil. Vermicomposting reduces the amount of garbage and produces useful manure at the same time. It is a simple and eco-friendly method that can be done at home or in schools.

6. Recycling of Garbage

Recycling means converting waste materials into new useful products. Many materials can be recycled: - Paper: Waste paper is recycled to make new paper, cardboard, and packaging material. - Glass: Broken glass is melted and made into new bottles and jars. - Metals: Metal cans are melted and made into new metal products. - Plastic: Some plastics are recycled to make new plastic products.

Recycling saves resources and energy. For example, recycling paper saves trees, and recycling metal saves the energy needed to mine and refine new metal. We should separate recyclable waste and send it for recycling.

7. The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The three R's help us reduce the amount of garbage we produce: - Reduce: Reduce the amount of waste we produce. Buy only what we need, use less packaging, and avoid disposable items. For example, carry our own cloth bag instead of taking plastic bags. - Reuse: Use things again instead of throwing them away. Use both sides of paper, refill bottles, and repair broken toys instead of buying new ones. - Recycle: Send waste materials like paper, glass, and metal for recycling so they can be made into new products.

By following the three R's, we can reduce the garbage problem and protect the environment.

8. Why is Plastic a Big Problem?

Plastic is a major problem for the environment because: - Plastic is non-biodegradable and does not decompose for hundreds of years. - Plastic bags and bottles choke drains and pollute soil and water. - Animals sometimes eat plastic and get sick or die. - Burning plastic releases harmful, toxic smoke. - Plastic in the oceans harms marine life.

We must reduce the use of plastic. We can carry cloth bags, use steel or glass containers, and say no to single-use plastic. By reducing plastic use, we protect our environment and living creatures.

9. Proper Disposal of Garbage

To dispose of garbage properly, we should: - Separate garbage at home into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. - Use separate bins for dry and wet waste. - Give biodegradable waste for composting. - Send paper, glass, and metal for recycling. - Never throw garbage on the road, in drains, or in water bodies. - Take extra care with harmful waste like batteries and broken glass.

Following these simple practices keeps our surroundings clean and healthy. A clean environment means less disease and a better quality of life.

10. The Role of Individuals in Garbage Management

Every individual can contribute to solving the garbage problem: - Avoid wasting food and resources. - Use cloth bags instead of plastic bags. - Carry your own water bottle and lunch box. - Compost kitchen waste at home. - Participate in cleaning drives in the neighbourhood. - Spread awareness among friends and family.

Small actions by millions of people can make a big difference. If everyone follows the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, our planet will be cleaner and healthier.
