2. Classification of Plants

Plants can be classified into three main groups based on their size, type of stem, and longevity.

This classification helps us study plants easily. The stem is the key feature used to tell herbs, shrubs, and trees apart. Herbs have soft green stems, while shrubs and trees have woody stems.

3. The Parts of a Plant

A flowering plant has several distinct parts. Each part has a specific function. The main parts of a plant are: - Roots: The underground part of the plant. - Stem: The part that grows above the ground and supports the plant. - Leaves: The green, flat structures that make food. - Flowers: The colourful parts that help in reproduction. - Fruits: The parts that contain and protect seeds.

4. The Root System

The root is the part of the plant that grows downwards into the soil. Roots perform several important functions: - They hold the plant firmly in the soil. - They absorb water and minerals from the soil. - In some plants, roots store food.

There are two main types of root systems: - Tap root system: In this system, there is one main thick root called the tap root, from which smaller roots grow. This is found in dicotyledonous plants like mustard, mango, and banyan. The tap root goes deep into the soil. - Fibrous root system: In this system, there is no main root. Many thin roots of similar size grow from the base of the stem. This is found in monocotyledonous plants like wheat, rice, grass, and onion. Fibrous roots spread near the surface of the soil.

Examples of roots we eat: carrot, radish, beetroot, and turnip are tap roots. These roots store food and become thick and fleshy.

5. The Stem

The stem is the part of the plant that grows above the ground. The stem performs important functions: - It supports the branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits. - It transports water and minerals from the roots to the leaves (upward). - It transports food made by the leaves to other parts of the plant (downward). - In some plants, the stem stores food, such as in potato and ginger.

The stem has nodes (points where leaves are attached) and internodes (the region between two nodes). Some plants have underground stems like potato and ginger. Some stems are modified for special functions, like tendrils in grapevines and thorns in some plants.

6. The Leaf

The leaf is the kitchen of the plant. Leaves are green because they contain a pigment called chlorophyll. The main parts of a leaf are: - Leaf blade or lamina: The flat, broad part of the leaf. - Petiole: The stalk that attaches the leaf to the stem. - Veins: The lines on the leaf blade. Veins transport water and food and give the leaf support. - Midrib: The main vein in the centre of the leaf.

There are two types of venation: - Reticulate venation: The veins form a net-like pattern. This is found in dicot plants like mango and banyan. - Parallel venation: The veins run parallel to each other. This is found in monocot plants like wheat and grass.

Interesting fact: The type of venation usually matches the type of root system. Plants with tap roots have reticulate venation, and plants with fibrous roots have parallel venation.

7. Photosynthesis: How Leaves Make Food

Leaves make food for the plant through a process called photosynthesis. The word photosynthesis means "making food with light". In this process, leaves use: - Sunlight (energy) - Carbon dioxide (from air) - Water (from soil, through roots)

Using these, the leaves produce food (glucose) and oxygen. The oxygen is released into the air. The chlorophyll in the leaves captures the energy of sunlight. Without chlorophyll, photosynthesis cannot happen.

The food made by leaves is transported to all parts of the plant. A part of the food is used immediately for energy, and the rest is stored in roots, stems, fruits, and seeds. Photosynthesis is the reason green plants are called producers in the food chain.

8. The Flower

A flower is the reproductive part of a plant. Flowers come in many colours, shapes, and sizes. Some flowers are big and colourful to attract insects, while others are small. The parts of a flower are: - Sepals: The small green leaf-like parts at the base of the flower. They protect the bud. - Petals: The colourful parts of the flower. They attract insects for pollination. - Stamens: The male reproductive parts. Each stamen has a filament and an anther, which produces pollen grains. - Pistil: The female reproductive part. It has the stigma (top), style (middle tube), and ovary (base which contains ovules).

Flowers can be classified by the parts they contain: - Unisexual flowers: Contain either stamens or pistil, but not both. Examples: papaya, cucumber, watermelon. - Bisexual flowers: Contain both stamens and pistil. Examples: hibiscus, rose, mustard.

9. The Fruit and the Seed

After pollination and fertilisation, the ovary of the flower develops into a fruit, and the ovules inside develop into seeds. The fruit protects the seeds and helps in their dispersal.

Some plants have one seed in a fruit (like mango), while others have many seeds (like watermelon and papaya). Fruits and seeds are essential for the survival and spread of the plant species.

10. Types of Roots and Stems We Eat

Many plants provide us with food in the form of roots, stems, and leaves: - Roots we eat: Carrot, radish, beetroot, turnip (tap roots). - Stems we eat: Potato, ginger, sugarcane, onion (some are underground stems). - Leaves we eat: Spinach, cabbage, mint, lettuce. - Flowers we eat: Cauliflower, broccoli. - Fruits we eat: Mango, apple, tomato, banana. - Seeds we eat: Wheat, rice, pulses, mustard.

11. How to Study a Flower

To study a flower, we can follow these steps: 1. Observe the flower and note its colour, size, and smell. 2. Carefully remove the parts from the outside to the inside. 3. First remove the sepals, then the petals. 4. Identify the stamens (male parts) with anthers. 5. Locate the pistil (female part) in the centre. 6. Make drawings and label the parts.

Using a magnifying glass can help us see the tiny parts clearly. Studying flowers this way helps us understand the structure and the role of each part in reproduction.
