1. Introduction

The ninth chapter of Ruchira Bhag 2 is titled विश्वबंदुत्वम् (Vishwabandhutwam), which means "universal brotherhood." The word is formed as vishva (the whole world, universe) + bandhutvam (brotherhood, the state of being a relative). Thus, विश्वबंदुत्वम् is the noble ideal that all people of the world are brothers and sisters - members of one large family.

The heart of this chapter is one of the most famous Sanskrit verses ever written:

अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्। उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥

"This is mine, that is another's" - such calculation belongs to the narrow-minded. For those of noble character, the whole earth (वसुधा) itself is one family (कुटुम्बम्).

This chapter teaches us that differences of country, religion, language, colour, and race should never divide humanity. We are all children of the same earth, and we must live with love, peace, and friendship. For Class 7 students, the lesson is important for its beautiful prose on global harmony, its explanation of the compound विश्वबंदुत्वम्, and its strong value-based message that is tested in examinations.

2. Lesson Meaning and Translation (Theme-wise)

2.1 The Earth is One Family

अस्माकं जन्मभूमिः सम्पूर्णः विश्वः अस्ति। सर्वे जनाः अस्माकं बान्धवाः सन्ति।

Our motherland is the entire world. All people are our relatives (बान्धवाः). Just as members of a family share joy and sorrow together, the people of the whole world should share love and cooperation. This great idea is called विश्वबंदुत्वम् - universal brotherhood.

Word meanings: जन्मभूमिः (motherland), सम्पूर्णः (whole), विश्वः (world), बान्धवाः (relatives), सन्ति (are), कुटुम्बम् (family), भ्रातरः (brothers).

2.2 The Noble Verse

"अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्। उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥"

The verse says: thinking "this is mine, that is another's" is the mark of a small (narrow) mind. But people of noble and generous character (उदारचरिताः) consider the whole earth as their family. They see the same divine self in everyone and feel love for all beings.

Word meanings: अयम् (this), निजः (one's own), परः (another's), इति (thus), गणना (counting/calculation), लघुचेतसाम् (of the small-minded), उदारचरितानाम् (of the noble-hearted), वसुधा (earth), एव (indeed), कुटुम्बकम् (family).

2.3 No Room for Hatred

विश्वबंदुत्वे सति द्वेषः, ईर्ष्या, घृणा च न भवेत्। सर्वेषु जनेषु मैत्री, प्रेम, शान्तिश्च भवेत्।

Where universal brotherhood exists, there should be no hatred (द्वेषः), jealousy (ईर्ष्या), or contempt (घृणा). Instead, there should be friendship (मैत्री), love (प्रेम), and peace (शान्तिः) among all people. We must welcome differences and celebrate unity in diversity.

Word meanings: द्वेषः (hatred), ईर्ष्या (jealousy), घृणा (contempt), भवेत् (should be), मैत्री (friendship), प्रेम (love), शान्तिः (peace), विविधता (diversity), एकता (unity).

2.4 The Wish for All Beings

सर्वेषां भवतु कल्याणम्, सर्वे जनाः सुखिनः भवन्तु, सर्वत्र शान्तिः प्रतिष्ठताम्।

May there be welfare for all; may all people be happy; may peace be established everywhere. This prayer (शान्तिमन्त्रः) expresses the true spirit of विश्वबंदुत्वम्. When we wish well for the whole world, the world becomes a better place for everyone.

Word meanings: कल्याणम् (welfare), सुखिनः (happy), भवन्तु (may they be), सर्वत्र (everywhere), शान्तिः (peace), प्रतिष्ठताम् (may be established), प्रार्थना (prayer).

2.5 Our Duty

अस्माभिः सर्वेषां हितं साधनीयम्। परहिते च मनः प्रयोजनीयम्। तदैव वयं विश्वबंदुत्वस्य प्रचारकाः भवेम।

We must work for the welfare of all (सर्वेषां हितम्). Our mind should be engaged in doing good to others (परहितम्). Only then can we be true preachers of universal brotherhood. Like the trees, rivers, and mountains that serve everyone, we too should serve humanity without any discrimination.

Word meanings: अस्माभिः (by us), हितम् (welfare), साधनीयम् (should be accomplished), परहितम् (good of others), प्रयोजनीयम् (should be engaged), प्रचारकाः (preachers), सेवा (service).

Message of the Lesson

विश्वबंदुत्वम् is the highest ideal of Indian culture. The whole world is one family. Narrow thinking - "mine and yours" - divides us, while noble thinking unites us. Love, peace, friendship, and service to all should be the foundation of human life.

Common Mistakes

  1. Misreading वसुधैव: वसुधैव = वसुधा + एव (the earth indeed). Do not split it as वसु + धैव. The sandhi is आ + ए → ऐ.
  2. Wrong gender for वसुधा: वसुधा is feminine (the earth), so the adjective and verb must agree in feminine, e.g., वसुधा ... कुटुम्बकम् is the predicate, so no conflict, but be careful in other sentences.
  3. Translating लघुचेतसाम् wrongly: लघुचेतसाम् means "of the small/narrow-minded," not "of short people." चेतस् means mind.
  4. Confusing निजः and परः: निजः = one's own; परः = another's. The verse contrasts these two. Do not swap their meanings.
  5. Using विश्वम् and बंदुत्वम् interchangeably: विश्वम् is the world; बंदुत्वम् is brotherhood. Together विश्वबंदुत्वम् is universal brotherhood.
  6. Wrong declension of बंधु: बंधुः is उकारान्त; its genitive is बंधोः, not बंधुस्य. Learn the full pattern.
  7. Forgetting the value of भवेयुः/भवेत्: These optative forms express wishes ("may it be"). Students often translate them as present tense.

Exam Tips

  1. Memorise the central verse fully: "अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्। उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥" - its recitation, split, and translation are top exam questions.
  2. Prepare the meaning of each compound: विश्वबंदुत्वम्, उदारचरितानाम्, जन्मभूमिः, वसुधैव - practise the samasa splits from Section 3.1.
  3. Learn the value table: Friendship, love, peace, welfare, service - matching questions on these Sanskrit values are common.
  4. Revise the optative: भवेत्, भवेयुः, भवेम (should/may be) and प्रतिष्ठताम् (may be established) - know their meanings.
  5. Practise word meanings: द्वेषः (hatred), ईर्ष्या (jealousy), मैत्री (friendship), शान्तिः (peace) - these are frequently asked.
  6. Use the message in essays: "The world is one family; differences should not divide us." This one-liner answers many essay and value questions.
  7. Connect to real life: Be ready to give an example of universal brotherhood (helping a classmate of another community, greeting everyone warmly) to score in application-based questions.

Conclusion

विश्वबंदुत्वम् presents the most beautiful ideal of Indian wisdom - that the entire world is one family. The famous verse "वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्" reminds us that narrow thinking divides, while noble thinking unites. Hatred, jealousy, and contempt have no place in a human heart; instead, friendship, love, peace, and service should rule our lives. In a world full of borders and differences, this lesson teaches us to see the unity behind the diversity. Grammatically, the chapter gives practice in compounds, the declension of बंधु, and the optative mood. As we go through life, let us remember: wherever there is love and peace, there is the true spirit of विश्वबंदुत्वम्.
