Reproduction is one of the characteristic features of all living organisms. In plants, reproduction can take place through seeds, fruits, roots, stems or leaves. Plants reproduce in many different ways. Some reproduce from small parts of their body, while others reproduce through seeds which are formed by the fusion of male and female cells. In budding, a small bud develops on the body of the parent and detaches to form a new organism, as seen in yeast. In spore formation, tiny spores are produced in structures called sporangia, and each spore grows into a new plant; this is seen in the bread mould fungus. Vegetative propagation is the reproduction of plants from vegetative parts like roots, stems and leaves.
Vegetative propagation is the most common method of asexual reproduction in plants, in which new plants grow from the roots, stems or leaves of the parent plant. Many plants have special vegetative parts that can grow into new plants. For example, potato has buds called eyes on its surface, and each eye can grow into a new plant. The stem of a potato tuber is underground, and its eyes are depressions that contain buds.
Different plants propagate vegetatively in different ways. Bryophyllum has buds on the edges of its leaves; when these leaves fall on moist soil, new plants grow from the buds. In plants like sugarcane and rose, pieces of stem with buds can be planted in soil and they grow into new plants; this method is called cutting. Plants like ginger, turmeric and banana propagate through their underground stems called rhizomes. In some plants, roots can also grow into new plants, as in sweet potato and dahlia. Vegetative propagation is important for farmers because it is faster and produces plants that are exactly like the parent.
Sexual reproduction in flowering plants takes place in the flower. The flower is the reproductive part of the plant. A typical flower has four whorls: sepals, petals, stamens and pistil. The sepals protect the flower bud, and the petals are colourful and attract insects and other agents for pollination. The stamen is the male reproductive part, which consists of an anther that produces pollen grains and a filament. The pistil is the female reproductive part, consisting of the stigma, style and ovary.
The ovary contains ovules, which contain the female gametes or egg cells. The male gamete is present in the pollen grains. Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of a flower. Pollination can occur by insects, wind, water and other animals. When the pollen reaches the stigma of the same flower, it is self-pollination, and when it reaches the stigma of another flower of the same plant, it is cross-pollination. Cross-pollination is carried out mainly by insects and wind.
After pollination, the pollen grain on the stigma germinates and a pollen tube grows down through the style into the ovary. The male gamete travels through this pollen tube and fuses with the egg cell in the ovule. This fusion of the male and female gametes is called fertilisation. After fertilisation, the ovule develops into a seed, and the ovary develops into a fruit.
The seed contains the embryo (the baby plant) and stored food. The fruit protects the seeds and helps in their dispersal. When the seed gets the right conditions of water, air, warmth and light, it germinates and grows into a new plant. Seeds are dispersed by wind, water, animals and even by the bursting of fruits. For example, winged seeds like those of drumstick and maple are carried by wind, coconut is dispersed by water, and seeds of Xanthium and other plants stick to animal fur. Dispersal of seeds prevents overcrowding and helps plants spread to new areas.
