The greenhouse effect is the warming of the earth caused by certain gases in the atmosphere that trap heat. The sun's rays warm the earth, and the earth gives back heat as infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and water vapour absorb some of this heat and keep the earth warm — this natural effect is essential for life. However, when we burn more fuels and increase these gases, extra heat is trapped, causing the earth's temperature to rise — this is global warming. Global warming can melt polar ice, raise sea levels, change weather patterns and affect agriculture.

Air pollution can be controlled by:
Using cleaner fuels: CNG and unleaded petrol in vehicles produce less pollution.
Checking emissions: Regular pollution checks of vehicles and proper maintenance.
Using public transport and carpooling: Reduces the number of vehicles on the road.
Planting trees: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, cleaning the air.
Reducing industrial smoke: Using filters and devices in factory chimneys.

Water that is safe and fit for drinking is called potable water. Contaminated water must be purified before drinking. Simple methods include:
Boiling: Boiling kills most disease-causing microorganisms.
Filtration: Passing water through a filter (like a cloth or a candle filter) removes insoluble impurities.
Chemical purification: Adding a few drops of iodine solution or chlorine tablets kills microbes.
Solar disinfection: Exposing water to sunlight in clear bottles.
Sedimentation: Letting heavy impurities settle at the bottom.
