Output devices display the results of processing in a form that humans can understand. The most common output device is the monitor, also called the Visual Display Unit (VDU). LED monitors are lighter, thinner and consume less power. The quality of a monitor is measured by its resolution, which is the number of pixels it can display.
The printer produces a permanent copy of the output on paper, which is called a hard copy. Printers are of two main types: impact printers and non-impact printers. Impact printers, like the dot matrix printer, print by physically striking the paper and are noisy. Non-impact printers, like inkjet and laser printers, print without striking the paper and are quiet.
