Chapter 13 of the NCERT Class 9 Sanskrit textbook "शेमुषी" (Shemushi) is called गद्यमाला, which means "A Garland of Prose". गद्यम् means prose and माला means a garland or string. The chapter is a collection of several short prose passages (गद्यखण्डाः) arranged like beads on a garland. These passages are taken from different themes — nature, animals, festivals, famous personalities, moral stories and day-to-day life. The purpose of this chapter is to train students in reading comprehension. By reading each short passage, students learn to understand the meaning, pick out key information, answer questions and enjoy the flow of Sanskrit prose. The chapter is especially useful because it presents the grammar and vocabulary already learnt in earlier chapters in a connected, natural form. This note explains the structure of the chapter, gives the method of tackling each passage, lists common words, discusses grammar (simple sentences, tenses, connectives), and provides quick revision tables, a mind map, SVG diagrams, common mistakes and exam tips.
What is गद्यमाला? The word माला (garland) tells us that the chapter strings together many small pieces of prose. Each piece is complete in itself and has a small theme. Together they form a garland of varied topics, so that students get practice in reading different kinds of Sanskrit prose.
The Themes of the Passages. The passages may describe a beautiful scene, tell a small story, introduce a great person or teach a simple moral. For example, one passage might describe the morning: the sun rising, birds singing and farmers going to the fields. Another might tell how an honest boy returned a lost purse, and a third might praise the value of good habits. Because the topics vary, the reader must adjust to different words and sentence patterns — exactly what a good comprehension exercise should do.
How to Read a Passage. The correct method is to read the passage slowly, first once to get the general idea, then again sentence by sentence. Look for the subject and verb of each sentence. Note the key words that answer who, what, when, where and why. Then answer the questions with the exact words from the passage. This method turns reading into understanding.
The Usefulness of the Chapter. This chapter connects all the previous chapters. Its sentences use the declensions, tenses, sandhi and vocabulary learnt earlier. So while reading, students revise everything: noun forms (शब्दरूपाणि), verb forms (धातुरूपाणि), compounds (समासः) and sandhi (सन्धिः). It is the best preparation for unseen passages in the exam.

Simple Sentences (सरलवाक्यानि): The passages mostly use simple sentences with a clear subject, object and verb. Example: सूर्यः उदेति — "The sun rises." Students should practise separating each sentence into its subject (कर्ता) and verb (क्रिया).
Tenses (लकाराः): The passages use the present tense (लट्) for general truths and descriptions, and the past tense (लङ्) for stories. Recognising the tense tells us whether the passage describes a scene or narrates an event.
Connectives (योजकशब्दाः): Words like च (and), अपि (also), तथा (and so), ततः (then), अतः (therefore) join sentences and show the flow of the passage. Learning connectives improves both reading and writing.
Comprehension Technique: To answer questions, underline the key word of the question (like कः, किम्, कुत्र, कदा) and search for that information in the passage. Answers must be written in full sentences, using the words of the passage.
गद्यमाला, through its varied passages, reinforces the good values already seen in the textbook: truthfulness, hard work, respect for elders, kindness to animals, love of nature and cleanliness. Each small passage teaches that good character and simple habits make life happy and society good. The chapter also values the discipline of careful reading — a skill that helps students in every subject.

गद्यमाला is a unique chapter that strings together several short prose passages like a garland. It trains students in reading comprehension — understanding a passage, finding information and answering questions in full sentences. Because the passages use the declensions, tenses, sandhi and vocabulary of earlier chapters, this chapter also serves as a complete revision of the whole textbook. The varied themes reinforce good values such as truthfulness, hard work, kindness and cleanliness. Students who master the reading method, learn the question words and connectives, revise the word list and practise answering in full sentences will score full marks both in this chapter and in the unseen passage section of the exam.
