1. Introduction

India is a land of vast diversity. Its physical features range from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas in the north to the sandy shores of the Indian Ocean in the south, and from the Thar Desert in the west to the evergreen forests of the northeast. These diverse physical features are the result of millions of years of geological processes — the movement of the earth's crust, volcanic activity, weathering, and erosion.

The physical features of India have shaped the lives of its people in countless ways. The fertile plains of the north support a large agricultural population, the peninsular plateau is rich in minerals, and the long coastline supports trade, fishing, and tourism. This chapter explains how the major physiographic divisions of India came into being and describes each of them in detail.

2. Formation of the Physical Features: The Theory of Plate Tectonics

2.1 The Plate Tectonic Theory

According to the theory of plate tectonics, the crust (upper part) of the earth has been formed out of seven major and some minor plates. These plates are in constant motion. When these plates collide, they may cause the folding of rocks along their margins, forming mountains. When two plates move apart, they create cracks in the crust, and the land between the cracks rises to form plateaus.

2.2 The Three Major Movements

The movement of the plates results in three types of plate boundaries: convergent boundaries, where plates collide with each other; divergent boundaries, where plates move apart; and transform boundaries, where plates move horizontally past each other. These movements have been responsible for the formation of the major landforms of the world.

2.3 Formation of the Himalayas

The oldest landmass of India, the Peninsular Plateau, was part of the Gondwana land, which included the present-day South America, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. Around 200 million years ago, the Gondwana land split, and the Indian plate moved northwards and collided with the much larger Eurasian plate. This collision, which began around 40-50 million years ago, caused the Tethys sea to be compressed, and the sediments were uplifted to form the Himalayan mountains and the Indo-Gangetic plain. The Himalayas are young, structurally folded mountains that are still rising.

3. Major Physiographic Divisions of India

India has the following major physiographic divisions:

  1. The Himalayan Mountains
  2. The Northern Plains
  3. The Peninsular Plateau
  4. The Indian Desert
  5. The Coastal Plains
  6. The Islands

3.1 The Himalayan Mountains

The Himalayas are the highest and one of the most recent mountain ranges in the world, stretching along the northern border of India. They run from the west to the east, and they are divided into three parallel ranges:

3.2 The Northern Plains

The northern plains lie between the Himalayan rivers in the north and the peninsular plateau in the south. These plains were formed by the alluvial deposits brought down by the rivers Indus, Ganga, and the Brahmaputra. The northern plains are the largest alluvial tracts of the world and are divided into three zones: the Bhabar (a narrow belt of pebbles along the foothills), the Terai (a marshy, damp zone where streams re-emerge), and the alluvial plains made up of older alluvium (bangar) and newer alluvium (khadar). These plains are extremely fertile and support a dense population.

3.3 The Peninsular Plateau

The Peninsular Plateau is a tableland composed of the old crystalline, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. It was formed due to the breaking and drifting of the Gondwana land. It is one of the oldest landmasses of the world. The plateau is divided into the Central Highlands and the Deccan Plateau. The Central Highlands lie to the north of the Narmada river, with the Malwa Plateau in the west, and the Chotanagpur Plateau in the east. The Deccan Plateau lies to the south of the Narmada, bordered by the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. The Western Ghats are higher and continuous, while the Eastern Ghats are lower and discontinuous, and are joined by a series of discontinuous hills. The plateau is rich in minerals like coal, iron ore, and manganese.

3.4 The Indian Desert

The Indian Desert lies to the western margins of the Aravalli Hills. It is an undulating sandy plain covered with sand dunes. This region receives very low rainfall, below 150 mm per year, and has a dry and sandy climate. The vegetation is sparse, and the Luni river is the only large river in this region.

3.5 The Coastal Plains

The eastern and western coasts of the peninsular plateau are called the eastern coastal plains and the western coastal plains. The western coastal plains are narrow, with the northern part called the Konkan coast, the central part called the Kannad plain, and the southern part called the Malabar coast. The eastern coastal plains are broad and level, with deltas formed by the rivers like the Mahanadi, the Godavari, the Krishna, and the Kaveri. The northern part of the eastern coast is called the Northern Circar and the southern part is called the Coromandel coast.

3.6 The Islands

India has two groups of islands: the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are an elevated portion of submarine mountains, and the Lakshadweep Islands are a group of coral islands, which are a major attraction for tourists.

Common Mistakes

  1. Students often say the Himalayas are the oldest mountains. The Himalayas are young, folded mountains, while the Peninsular Plateau is the oldest landmass.
  2. Many write that Mount Everest is in India. Mount Everest lies in Nepal; the highest peak within India is K2 (in the Karakoram range, located in the Jammu and Kashmir region).
