Our Earth provides us with everything we need to survive and thrive—air, water, soil, minerals, coal, petroleum, forests, and wildlife. These are our natural resources. However, with a rapidly growing human population and increasing industrialization, we are exploiting these resources at an alarming rate. If we continue on this path, these resources will soon be exhausted, and our environment will be irreparably damaged. Therefore, we must manage them sustainably.
Sustainable Development refers to economic development that meets the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It encourages forms of growth that meet current basic human needs, while preserving the resources for the future.
To save the environment, we must practice the 5 R’s: * Refuse: Say no to things you don't need (e.g., refusing single-use plastic bags). * Reduce: Use less (e.g., switching off unnecessary lights, fixing leaky taps). * Reuse: Using things again and again is actually better than recycling because it saves the energy required for the recycling process (e.g., using old plastic bottles to store things). * Repurpose: When a product can no longer be used for its original purpose, think carefully and use it for some other useful purpose (e.g., using cracked mugs to grow small plants). * Recycle: Collect plastic, paper, glass, and metal items and recycle these materials to make required things instead of synthesizing or extracting fresh plastic, paper, glass, or metal.
Forests are 'biodiversity hot spots'. One measure of the biodiversity of an area is the number of species found there. However, the range of different life forms (bacteria, fungi, ferns, nematodes, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals) is also important.
When we consider the conservation of forests, we need to look at the stakeholders (people who have an interest in the forest): 1. The people who live in or around forests: They depend on forest produce for various aspects of their life (firewood, timber, thatch, fodder, medicine). 2. The Forest Department of the Government: They own the land and control the resources from forests. 3. The Industrialists: They use forest produce as raw materials (e.g., timber for furniture, wood for paper mills) but are not dependent on the forests in any one area. 4. The Wildlife and Nature Enthusiasts: They want to conserve nature in its pristine form.
Management of Forests: Historically, local people lived in harmony with the forest, extracting resources sustainably. Problems began with British colonial rule and continued after independence when the government took over, alienating local people and focusing heavily on monocultures (planting only pine, teak, or eucalyptus). This destroyed biodiversity and ignored local needs. Successful forest management requires the active participation of local communities (e.g., the Chipko Andolan, the revival of the Sal forests in Arabari, West Bengal).
Water is a basic necessity for all terrestrial forms of life. Despite being the 'Blue Planet', freshwater is scarce. Our activities are polluting available water sources, and erratic monsoons cause frequent droughts.
Large dams can ensure the storage of adequate water for irrigation and generating electricity. Canal systems leading from these dams can transfer large amounts of water over great distances (e.g., Indira Gandhi Canal in Rajasthan). * Problems with large dams: 1. Social problems: They displace large numbers of peasants and tribals without adequate compensation or rehabilitation. 2. Economic problems: They swallow up huge amounts of public money without the generation of proportionate benefits. 3. Environmental problems: They contribute enormously to deforestation and the loss of biological diversity.
Instead of focusing solely on mega-projects, a localized, decentralized approach is often better. Water harvesting is an age-old concept in India. * Techniques: Khadins, tanks, and nadis in Rajasthan; bandharas and tals in Maharashtra; bundhis in Madhya Pradesh; ahars and pynes in Bihar; eris in Tamil Nadu. * Concept: The basic idea is not just to hold surface water, but to let it percolate and recharge the groundwater. * Advantages of Groundwater: It does not evaporate; it spreads out to recharge wells; it provides moisture for vegetation over a wide area; it does not provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes; and it is protected from human and animal waste contamination.
Coal and petroleum are the most important sources of energy for us today. They are fossil fuels, formed from the degradation of bio-mass millions of years ago.
The sustainable management of natural resources is not just an environmental issue; it is a survival issue. We must shift from a mindset of unchecked exploitation to one of stewardship. Whether it involves empowering local communities to protect forests, reviving ancient water harvesting techniques to recharge groundwater, or drastically reducing our reliance on polluting fossil fuels, the principles of the 5 R's must guide our actions. We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.
