Tissues

Study plant and animal tissues, their structure, location, and functions in living organisms.

Tissues

A tissue is a group of cells similar in structure and function. Plant tissues are classified as meristematic (dividing) and permanent (non-dividing). Animal tissues include epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissues.

Blood and bone are examples of connective tissues. Neurons form the nervous tissue responsible for transmitting stimuli. Xylem and Phloem are complex permanent tissues in plants responsible for conducting water and food, respectively.

Key Concepts & Summary

1. Introduction to Tissues

A group of cells that are similar in structure and/or work together to achieve a particular function forms a tissue. Plants and animals have different types of tissues because of their different lifestyles and requirements.

2. Plant Tissues

  • Meristematic Tissue: Dividing tissues found in growing regions (Apical, Lateral, Intercalary).
  • Permanent Tissue: Cells that have lost the ability to divide.
    • Simple: Parenchyma, Collenchyma, Sclerenchyma.
    • Complex: Xylem (conducts water) and Phloem (conducts food).

3. Animal Tissues

  • Epithelial: Protective covering (Skin, lining of mouth, etc.).
  • Connective: Binds and supports (Blood, Bone, Cartilage, Ligaments, Tendons).
  • Muscular: Responsible for movement (Striated, Smooth, Cardiac).
  • Nervous: Transmits stimuli (Neurons).
