1. Subject-Verb Concord (कर्ता-क्रिया सहमति) - विस्तृत परिचय

Subject-Verb Concord का अर्थ है वाक्य में Subject और Verb का आपसी सहमत होना। अर्थात यदि Subject Singular है तो Verb भी Singular होगी, और यदि Subject Plural है तो Verb भी Plural होगी। उदाहरण के लिए She sings well में She Singular है, इसलिए Verb sings में s लगा है; जबकि They sing well में They Plural है, इसलिए Verb sing है। इस नियम को Agreement of Verb with Subject भी कहते हैं। Class 10 की परीक्षा में Subject-Verb Concord पर Gap Filling, Error Correction और Sentence Completion के प्रश्न नियमित रूप से आते हैं।

English में Verb के रूपों में Singular और Plural का अंतर सबसे स्पष्ट Present Simple में दिखता है, जहाँ Third Person Singular Subject के साथ Verb में s/es जुड़ता है। इसके अलावा Helping Verbs के चयन में भी यह सहमति दिखती है — Present में is/are, has/have तथा Past में was/were।

2. मूल नियम (Basic Rules)

(i) Singular Subject के साथ Singular Verb

Singular Subject के साथ Singular Verb प्रयोग होती है। Present Simple में इसमें s/es जुड़ता है। The bird flies in the sky., A river flows through the city., My brother works in Delhi. इन वाक्यों में Subject एकवचन है, इसलिए Verb में s लगा है।

(ii) Plural Subject के साथ Plural Verb

Plural Subject के साथ Plural Verb प्रयोग होती है, जिसमें s/es नहीं जुड़ता। The birds fly in the sky., Rivers flow through the city., My brothers work in Delhi. Plural Subject के साथ Verb First Form में रहती है।

(iii) Helping Verbs की सहमति

Subject Present Past
I am / have was / had
He, She, It, Singular Noun is / has was / had
We, You, They, Plural Noun are / have were / had

The child is playing. बनाम The children are playing., He has done it. बनाम They have done it., She was present. बनाम They were present.

3. Collective Nouns के साथ सहमति (Agreement with Collective Nouns)

(i) पूरे समूह के रूप में (As a Single Unit)

जब Collective Noun (team, class, committee, army, family, crowd) पूरे समूह को एक इकाई के रूप में दर्शाता है, तो Verb Singular आती है। The team is playing well. (टीम एक इकाई के रूप में), The committee has taken its decision., Our class is going on a picnic.

(ii) समूह के सदस्यों के रूप में (As Individual Members)

जब Collective Noun समूह के अलग-अलग सदस्यों को दर्शाता है, तो Verb Plural आती है। The team are wearing their new jerseys., The jury were divided in their opinions. परंतु परीक्षा की दृष्टि से Collective Noun के साथ Singular Verb ही अधिक सुरक्षित है।

4. Indefinite Pronouns के साथ सहमति

(i) Singular Indefinite Pronouns

Each, every, either, neither, one, everyone, everybody, someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, nobody, no one, nothing — ये सभी Singular होते हैं, इसलिए इनके साथ Singular Verb आती है। Each of the students has a book., Everyone is welcome to the party., Neither of the answers is correct., Something is wrong with the machine.

(ii) Plural Indefinite Pronouns

Both, several, few, many, others — ये Plural होते हैं, इसलिए इनके साथ Plural Verb आती है। Both of them are doctors., Several were absent from the meeting., Many have applied for the scholarship.

(iii) All, Some, Any, None

ये Pronoun वाक्य में Subject की तरह आएं तो Verb का रूप उन Noun/Noun Phrases पर निर्भर करता है जिनका वे संकेत करते हैं। All of the cake is eaten. (cake uncountable) बनाम All of the cookies are eaten. (cookies countable plural), Some of the milk is spoilt. बनाम Some of the apples are rotten.

5. Special Cases - कुछ विशेष स्थितियाँ

(i) Either...Or और Neither...Nor के साथ सहमति

जब दो Subjects Either...Or या Neither...Nor से जुड़े हों, तो Verb उस Subject के अनुसार आती है जो Verb के निकट (nearest) हो। Either Ram or his friends are responsible. (friends निकट है), Neither the students nor the teacher was present. (teacher निकट है), Either the manager or the clerks have signed it.

(ii) And से जुड़े Subjects

दो या दो से अधिक Subjects And से जुड़े हों तो Verb Plural आती है। Ravi and Mohan are good friends., The pen and the paper are on the table. परंतु यदि दोनों Nouns मिलकर एक ही व्यक्ति या वस्तु को दर्शाते हैं, तो Verb Singular आती है। Bread and butter is my breakfast., The poet and the novelist has arrived. (यदि दोनों एक ही व्यक्ति हों) — जबकि The poet and the novelist have arrived तब होगा जब दो अलग व्यक्ति हों।

(iii) Intervening Phrases से बचाव

Subject और Verb के बीच आने वाली Phrases (along with, as well as, together with, in addition to, besides, including) Verb की सहमति को प्रभावित नहीं करतीं। The teacher, along with his students, is going on a trip., Ramesh, as well as his brothers, plays cricket., The box of chocolates was on the shelf.

(iv) Numbers और Amounts

धन, समय, दूरी और माप को एक इकाई के रूप में लेते हुए Verb Singular आती है। Ten thousand rupees is a lot of money., Five kilometres is a long distance., Two hours is enough for the exam. परंतु जब गिनती की अलग-अलग इकाइयाँ हों तो Plural आती है, जैसे There are two rooms in this house.

(v) Uncountable Nouns

Uncountable Nouns (water, milk, knowledge, information, furniture, advice) के साथ हमेशा Singular Verb आती है। The information is correct., Milk is good for health., This furniture looks expensive.
