Chapter 6 of the NCERT Class 10 Sanskrit textbook "शेमुषी" (Shemushi) is called सुभाषितानि, which means "Well-spoken words" or "Wise sayings". The word is सु (well) + भाषितानि (spoken things). A सुभाषितम् is a short Sanskrit verse that teaches a deep truth of life in a few sweet words. The chapter is a collection of famous subhashitas composed by the great poets of ancient India. Each verse carries a moral or practical lesson — the value of knowledge, the importance of effort, the power of truth, the nature of a good person, the danger of greed, the way to test a friend, and the duty of serving others. These wise sayings have been preserved for thousands of years and remain as fresh and true today as when they were first written. The chapter teaches students how a single verse can hold the wisdom of a whole life. Studying it improves the student's Sanskrit, gives material for essay and value-based answers, and builds good character. This note explains the sayings in English, gives word meanings and grammar, and provides revision tables, a mind map, SVG diagrams, common mistakes and exam tips.
विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद् याति पात्रताम्। पात्रत्वाद् धनमाप्नोति धनाद् धर्मं ततः सुखम्॥
Meaning: "Knowledge gives humility (विनयम्). From humility one attains worthiness (पात्रता). From worthiness one obtains wealth (धनम्). From wealth one performs virtue (धर्मम्), and from virtue one gains happiness (सुखम्)." This famous verse by Kalidasa shows the ladder of success — knowledge is the first step, and happiness is the last.
उद्यमेन हि सिध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथैः। न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगाः॥
Meaning: "Tasks succeed through effort (उद्यमेन), not through mere wishes (मनोरथैः). Deer do not enter the mouth of a sleeping lion." The verse teaches that only hard work fulfils our goals; lazy wishing is useless.
यथा चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्षितं निघर्षणच्छेदनतापताडनैः। तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुषः परीक्षितः त्यागेन शीलेन गुणेन कर्मणा॥
Meaning: "Just as gold is tested by four means — rubbing, cutting, heating and hammering — in the same way a person is tested by four things: sacrifice (त्यागेन), good conduct (शीलेन), virtue (गुणेन) and deeds (कर्मणा)." Gold and men are both proved by their worth under testing.
सत्यं ब्रूयात् प्रियं ब्रूयात् न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम्। प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयात् एष धर्मः सनातनः॥
Meaning: "Speak the truth; speak what is pleasant; do not speak the truth that is unpleasant; do not speak a pleasant falsehood. This is the eternal law (सनातनः धर्मः) of speech." The verse teaches balanced, honest and kind speech.
विद्या नाम नरस्य रूपमधिकं प्रच्छन्नगुप्तं धनम्। विद्या भोगकरी यशःसुखकरी विद्या गुरूणां गुरुः॥
Meaning: "Knowledge is the best form of a person; it is hidden and protected wealth. Knowledge gives enjoyment, fame and happiness; it is the guru of gurus." Knowledge can never be stolen and never leaves a person.
परोपकाराय फलन्ति वृक्षाः परोपकाराय वहन्ति नद्यः। परोपकाराय दुहन्ति गावः परोपकारार्थमिदं शरीरम्॥
Meaning: "Trees bear fruit for the benefit of others; rivers flow for the benefit of others; cows give milk for the benefit of others; this body too exists for the service of others." It teaches selfless service (परोपकारः).
लोभः पापस्य कारणम्... / अतिलोभो न कर्तव्यः...
Meaning: "Greed is the cause of sin; excessive greed must never be practised." Greed (लोभः) destroys wisdom, virtue and peace. One should be content with what one earns honestly.
न कश्चित् कस्यचित् मित्रं न कश्चित् कस्यचित् रिपुः। व्यवहारेण मित्राणि व्यवहारेण रिपवः॥
Meaning: "No one is naturally another's friend, and no one is naturally another's enemy. It is by dealings (व्यवहारेण) that people become friends or enemies." Our behaviour towards others decides friendship or enmity.
गच्छति समयः निवर्तते न...
Meaning: The saying teaches that time, once gone, never returns; therefore one should use every moment for study and good deeds. Time is the most precious treasure.
पुस्तकस्था तु या विद्या परहस्तगतं धनम्।
Meaning: "Knowledge that stays only in a book, like wealth in another's hands, is of no use." Knowledge must be learnt, understood and applied in life.

The word सुभाषितम्: It is a compound सु + भाषितम्, formed by vowel sandhi (उ + आ... actually उ + भ = the उ stays). The root is भाष् (to speak) with the participle भाषितम्. The plural सुभाषितानि is neuter nominative.
Compounds (समासाः): परोपकारः = पर + उपकारः (tatpurusha: good deed for others). विद्याधनम् (vidya as wealth) — कर्मधारय. गुरूणां गुरुः (guru of gurus) shows the genitive.
Metaphor (उपमा): The comparison of a man with gold (यथा कनकम्... तथा पुरुषः) is a famous upama (simile). Learn to explain it.
Verb forms: ददाति (gives), आप्नोति (obtains), सिध्यन्ति (succeed), प्रविशन्ति (enter), ब्रूयात् (should speak — optative), वहन्ति (flow), दुहन्तi (give milk). Note the optative ब्रूयात् for advice.
Cases: The instrumental case (तृतीया) is used for the means of testing: निघर्षणेन, छेदनेन, तापेन, ताडनेन (by rubbing, cutting, heating, hammering) and त्यागेन, शीलेन, गुणेन, कर्मणा.
सुभाषितानि is a treasure of values: knowledge gives humility and leads to happiness; effort, not wishing, brings success; a person's worth is tested by sacrifice, conduct, virtue and deeds; we must speak truth gently; knowledge is the safest wealth; trees, rivers and cows serve others, and so should we; greed is the root of sin; behaviour makes friends and enemies; time must be used well; and knowledge must be applied to be useful. These sayings teach students to be good, hard-working, truthful and helpful human beings.
