1. Introduction

Climate is the sum total of weather conditions over a large area for a long period of time, while weather is the day-to-day state of the atmosphere. India's climate is greatly influenced by its location, its mountain ranges and the monsoon winds. The natural vegetation and the wildlife of India are directly related to its climate.

2. Weather and Climate

Weather refers to the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere, such as whether it is hot or cold, sunny or cloudy, raining or dry. Weather changes from day to day and even from hour to hour.

Climate refers to the average weather conditions of a place over a long period of time, usually thirty years or more. Climate does not change from day to day; it is the long-term pattern of weather. For example, the climate of Rajasthan is hot and dry, while the climate of Meghalaya is wet. The elements of weather and climate include temperature, humidity, precipitation (rain, snow), wind and atmospheric pressure.

3. The Climate of India

India has a monsoon type of climate, which is found mainly in South and Southeast Asia. The word "monsoon" comes from the Arabic word "mausim", which means "season".

The monsoon winds bring most of the rainfall to India. India's climate is influenced by: - The latitude: The Tropic of Cancer divides India, giving it a tropical climate in the south and a subtropical climate in the north. - The Himalayas: They block the cold winds from Central Asia and make India warmer in winter. - The land-water relationship: The sea moderates the climate of the coastal areas. - The distance from the sea: Places far from the sea have a more extreme climate (hotter summers and colder winters).

4. The Monsoon Winds

The monsoon winds are the winds that change their direction with the change of season. They are the most important feature of the Indian climate because they bring most of the rainfall.

The two branches of the monsoon are: - The Arabian Sea branch of the south-west monsoon. - The Bay of Bengal branch of the south-west monsoon.

The south-west monsoon brings rain to most parts of India between June and September. The north-east monsoon brings rain to the south-eastern coast (Tamil Nadu) in winter. The monsoon is very important because the agriculture of India depends on it, and the whole country eagerly awaits its arrival.

5. The Seasons of India

India has four main seasons: 1. Winter (December to February): The coldest season, with the north experiencing cold waves and frost. 2. Summer (March to May): The hottest season, when the day temperatures rise, especially in the plains. 3. South-west monsoon season (June to September): The rainy season, when most of the country receives rain from the monsoon winds. 4. Season of retreating monsoon (October to November): The period when the monsoon winds return, giving some rain to the eastern coast.

Each season has its own weather conditions, and the farmers' calendar of India is closely tied to these seasons.

6. Natural Vegetation

The natural vegetation of a region is the plant life that grows naturally without the help of human beings. The natural vegetation of India is very varied because of the variety in climate and soil.

The natural vegetation of India is divided into several types: - Tropical evergreen forests - Tropical deciduous forests - Thorny bushes - Mountain vegetation - Mangrove forests

7. Tropical Evergreen Forests

The tropical evergreen forests are found in areas of heavy rainfall, more than 200 cm per year. They are found in the western slopes of the Western Ghats, the north-eastern states, and the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

These forests are very thick and dense, with tall trees. The trees remain green throughout the year because there is no dry season. The trees of these forests include rosewood, ebony and mahogany. Because the forests are so dense, it is difficult for sunlight to reach the ground, and the animals and birds are found mostly in the upper parts of the trees.

8. Tropical Deciduous Forests

The tropical deciduous forests are the most widespread forests of India. They are also called monsoon forests, and they are found in areas with rainfall between 200 cm and 70 cm.

These forests have trees that shed their leaves in the dry season, so they are not green throughout the year. They are of two types: - Moist deciduous forests, found in areas of higher rainfall, with trees like teak and sal. - Dry deciduous forests, found in areas of less rainfall, with trees like sandalwood and mahua.

These forests provide most of the timber and firewood of India, and their trees are very useful.

The tiger is a protected animal, and there are special reserves for its protection, like Project Tiger.

The natural vegetation and wildlife of India are being destroyed by human activities: - Deforestation: The cutting of trees for timber, fuel and land for farming. - Hunting: The killing of animals for their skin, ivory and other products. - Pollution: The pollution of air and water harms plants and animals.

To protect the vegetation and wildlife: - The government has established national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. - Projects like Project Tiger and Project Elephant protect endangered animals. - Laws have been made against hunting. - Planting trees and saving forests is the duty of every citizen.
