1. Introduction

The thirteenth chapter of Ruchira Bhag 2 is titled अमृतं संस्कृतम् (Amritam Sanskritam), which means "Sanskrit is nectar (amrita)." The chapter is a beautiful essay (गद्य) praising the Sanskrit language, which is considered the most ancient language of the world and the mother of many languages. Just as nectar (अमृतम्) gives immortality and supreme nourishment, Sanskrit gives the world eternal knowledge, culture, and science.

The lesson highlights three great treasures: 1. Sanskrit is the oldest language and the storehouse of ancient knowledge, 2. Sanskrit literature - Vedas, Puranas, epics, Nitishastra, and poetry - is vast and matchless, 3. Sanskrit science - zero, medicine, astronomy, architecture - has given the world priceless gifts.

The chapter also corrects a wrong belief: some people think Sanskrit contains only religious literature. In fact, Sanskrit books cover almost every subject of human life - from mathematics to medicine, from astronomy to architecture.

For Class 7 students, this chapter is important because: - It fills us with pride in our ancient language and culture, - It introduces the इकारान्त स्त्रीलिङ्ग (i-ending feminine) declension with words like मति and गति, - It teaches the names of famous scholars (Aryabhata, Kautilya, Charaka, Sushruta, Kalidasa), - And it is a favourite for essays on Sanskrit and its importance.

2. Lesson Meaning and Translation (Theme-wise)

2.1 Sanskrit - The Most Ancient Language

विश्वस्य उपलब्धासु भाषासु संस्कृतभाषा प्राचीनतमा भाषा अस्ति। भाषेयं अनेकाषां भाषाणां जननी मता।

Among all the languages available in the world, Sanskrit is the most ancient (प्राचीनतमा). This language is considered the mother (जननी) of many languages. Just as a mother nourishes her children, Sanskrit has given birth to and nourished many languages of India and the world. The treasure of ancient knowledge and science (ज्ञानविज्ञान) is safely preserved in this language.

Word meanings: विश्वस्य (of the world), उपलब्धासु (available), भाषासु (among languages), प्राचीनतमा (most ancient), जननी (mother), मता (is considered), निधिः (treasure), ज्ञानविज्ञानम् (knowledge and science), सुरक्षितः (safely preserved).

2.2 India's Two Prides

"भारतस्य प्रतिष्ठे द्वे संस्कृतं संस्कृतिस्तथा।" इयं भाषा अतीव वैज्ञानिकी।

It has been said: "India's two glories are Sanskrit and culture (संस्कृति)." This language is extremely scientific (वैज्ञानिकी). Its grammar, composed by Panini, is so precise that some people consider Sanskrit the best language for computers and artificial intelligence. Its sounds are formed scientifically, and its words are built from roots with perfect rules.

Word meanings: प्रतिष्ठे (glories/prestiges), द्वे (two), संस्कृतम् (Sanskrit), संस्कृतिः (culture), तथा (and), अतीव (very), वैज्ञानिकी (scientific), व्याकरणम् (grammar), पाणिनिः (Panini).

2.3 The Richness of Sanskrit Literature

अस्याः वाङ्मयं वेदैः, पुराणैः, नीतिशास्त्रैः, चिकित्साशास्त्रादिभिश्च समृद्धम् अस्ति। कालिदासादीनां विश्वकवीनां काव्यसौन्दर्यम् अनुपमम्।

The literature (वाङ्मयम्) of Sanskrit is enriched with the Vedas, Puranas, Nitishastras (books of ethics), and medical science (चिकित्साशास्त्रम्), and much more. The poetic beauty of world poets like Kalidasa is incomparable (अनुपमम्). The Ramayana of Valmiki and the Mahabharata of Vyasa are the priceless epics of humanity.

Word meanings: वाङ्मयम् (literature), वेदैः (by the Vedas), पुराणैः (by the Puranas), नीतिशास्त्रैः (by books of ethics), चिकित्साशास्त्रम् (medical science), समृद्धम् (rich), कालिदासः (Kalidasa), काव्यसौन्दर्यम् (poetic beauty), अनुपमम् (incomparable), महाभारतम् (Mahabharata).

2.4 Sanskrit and Science

गणितशास्त्रे शून्यस्य प्रतिपादनं सर्वप्रथमम् आर्यभटः अकरोत्। चिकित्साशास्त्रे चरकसुश्रुतयोः योगदानं विश्वप्रसिद्धम्। कौटिल्यरचितम् अर्थशास्त्रं जगति प्रसिद्धम् अस्ति।

In mathematics, Aryabhata first propounded the concept of zero (शून्यम्) - the foundation of all modern mathematics. In medicine, the contribution of Charaka and Sushruta is world-famous; Sushruta is even called the father of surgery. The Arthashastra written by Kautilya (Chanakya) is famous throughout the world as a masterwork of economics and statecraft.

Word meanings: गणितशास्त्रम् (mathematics), शून्यम् (zero), प्रतिपादनम् (propounding), सर्वप्रथमम् (first of all), आर्यभटः (Aryabhata), चरकः (Charaka), सुश्रुतः (Sushruta), योगदानम् (contribution), विश्वप्रसिद्धम् (world-famous), कौटिल्यः (Kautilya), अर्थशास्त्रम् (Arthashastra), जगति (in the world).

2.5 Other Sciences in Sanskrit

संस्कृते वास्तुशास्त्रं, रसायनशास्त्रं, खगोलविज्ञानं, ज्योतिषशास्त्रं, विमानशास्त्रं इत्यादीनि शास्त्राणि विद्यन्ते।

In Sanskrit there exist sciences like architecture (वास्तुशास्त्रम्), chemistry (रसायनशास्त्रम्), astronomy and space science (खगोलविज्ञानम्), astrology (ज्योतिषशास्त्रम्), and even the science of aviation (विमानशास्त्रम्). So the belief that Sanskrit has only religious literature is wrong (समीचीना नास्ति). Sanskrit books cover all subjects needed for human life.

Word meanings: वास्तुशास्त्रम् (science of architecture), रसायनशास्त्रम् (chemistry), खगोलविज्ञानम् (astronomy/space science), ज्योतिषशास्त्रम् (astrology), विमानशास्त्रम् (science of flying machines), धारणा (belief), समीचीना (correct/appropriate).

2.6 The Wisdom of the Suktis

संस्कृते विद्यमानाः सूक्तयः अभ्युदयाय प्रेरयन्ति - "सत्यमेव जयते, वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्, विद्ययाऽमृतमश्नुते, योगः कर्मसु कौशलम्।"

The wise sayings (सूक्तयः) found in Sanskrit inspire us towards progress - "Truth alone triumphs (सत्यमेव जयते)", "The whole earth is one family (वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्)", "Through knowledge one enjoys immortality (विद्यया अमृतम् अश्नुते)", and "Skill in action is yoga (योगः कर्मसु कौशलम्)". These suktis teach us truth, unity, learning, and perfect action.

Word meanings: सूक्तयः (wise sayings), अभ्युदयाय (for progress), प्रेरयन्ति (inspire), सत्यमेव जयते (truth alone wins), वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् (earth is one family), अमृतम् (nectar/immortality), अश्नुते (attains), कौशलम् (skill).

2.7 Why We Must Study Sanskrit

अतः अस्माभिः संस्कृतम् अवश्यमेव पठनीयम्। तेन मनुष्यस्य समाजस्य च परिष्कारः भवेत्। उक्तं च - "अमृतं संस्कृतं मित्र! सरसं सरलं वचः। भाषासु महनीयं यद् ज्ञानविज्ञानपोषकम्॥"

Therefore, we must certainly read Sanskrit (अस्माभिः संस्कृतम् अवश्यमेव पठनीयम्). Through it, the refinement of the individual and society can take place. And it is said: "O friend! Sanskrit is nectar - sweet and simple speech; it is the most honourable among languages because it nourishes knowledge and science."

Word meanings: अस्माभिः (by us), अवश्यमेव (certainly), पठनीयम् (should be read), परिष्कारः (refinement), मनुष्यः (man), समाजः (society), भवेत् (may be), अमृतम् (nectar), सरसम् (juicy/beautiful), सरलम् (simple), महनीयम् (honourable), ज्ञानविज्ञानपोषकम् (nourisher of knowledge and science).

Message of the Lesson

Sanskrit is nectar - the immortal language of knowledge, science, and culture. It is the mother of languages, the treasure of ancient wisdom, and the source of countless scientific achievements. We must study it with pride and keep it alive, because in Sanskrit lives the soul of India.

3. Grammar and Language Points

3.1 The इकारान्त स्त्रीलिङ्ग Declension (मति and गति)

Words like मति (intellect), गति (movement), शक्ति (power), भक्ति (devotion) are ई-ending (इकारान्त) feminine nouns. The lesson uses this pattern:

Vibhakti Singular Dual Plural
प्रथमा मतिः मती मतयः
द्वितीया मतिम् मती मतीः
तृतीया मत्या मतिभ्याम् मतिभिः
चतुर्थी मत्यै / मतये मतिभ्याम् मतिभ्यः
पञ्चमी मत्याः / मतेः मतिभ्याम् मतिभ्यः
षष्ठी मत्याः / मतेः मत्योः मतीनाम्
सप्तमी मत्याम् / मतौ मत्योः मतिषु

Note: For some cases, both forms are correct (e.g., मत्यै/मतये), giving students two acceptable options.

Common Mistakes

  1. Writing प्राचीनतमा as प्राचीनम्: प्राचीनतमा means "most ancient" (superlative). The word describes भाषा (feminine), so use the feminine form प्राचीनतमा.
  2. Confusing आर्यभट with आर्यभट्ट: The mathematician who propounded zero is आर्यभट (Aryabhata). Spell it correctly in answers.
  3. Wrong contribution attribution: Zero - Aryabhata; medicine - Charaka & Sushruta; Arthashastra - Kautilya. Mixing these names loses easy marks.
  4. Saying Sanskrit has only religious literature: The chapter clearly states this belief is wrong (धारणा समीचीना नास्ति). Sanskrit covers science too - never repeat this mistake in answers.
  5. Mistaking इकारान्त for ईकारान्त: Words like मति, गति end in short इ (इकारान्त), while words like नदी end in long ई. The declensions are different (मतिः vs नदी).
  6. Getting the इकारान्त forms wrong: The genitive of मति is मत्याः/मतेः, not मतिस्य. Learn the pattern carefully.
  7. Misspelling the suktis: सत्यमेव जयते, वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्, विद्यया अमृतम् अश्नुते, योगः कर्मसु कौशलम् - practice spelling each sukti exactly.

Exam Tips

  1. Memorise the closing shloka: "अमृतं संस्कृतं मित्र! सरसं सरलं वचः। भाषासु महनीयं यद् ज्ञानविज्ञानपोषकम्॥" - it is a top recitation question.
  2. Learn the scientists' table: Zero (Aryabhata), medicine (Charaka-Sushruta), Arthashastra (Kautilya) - factual questions on these are guaranteed.
  3. Master the इकारान्त स्त्रीलिङ्ग table: मति/गति declension is the main grammar of this chapter. Learn all seven cases.
  4. Prepare the suktis with meanings: The four suktis in Table 2 appear in translation and matching questions.
  5. Write the essay points: "Sanskrit is the most ancient language, mother of languages, rich in science and literature, so we must study it." This paragraph answers essay questions.
  6. Build the sciences vocabulary: वास्तुशास्त्रम्, रसायनशास्त्रम्, खगोलविज्ञानम्, ज्योतिषशास्त्रम्, विमानशास्त्रम् - know each.
  7. Practise compound analysis: ज्ञानविज्ञानम् (द्वन्द्व), विश्वप्रसिद्धम् (तत्पुरुष), काव्यसौन्दर्यम् (तत्पुरुष) - be ready to split them.

Conclusion

अमृतं संस्कृतम् is a proud tribute to the world's most ancient and scientific language. Sanskrit is not merely a language of prayers - it is the mother of languages, the keeper of the Vedas and Puranas, the home of Kalidasa's poetry, and the source of zero, medicine, and the Arthashastra. From architecture to aviation, Sanskrit literature covers all human knowledge. The wise suktis of Sanskrit continue to guide humanity towards truth, unity, and progress. For students, this chapter builds pride in our heritage and teaches the इकारान्त feminine declension beautifully. As the chapter urges, let us study Sanskrit with devotion - for अमृतं संस्कृतम्, Sanskrit is truly the nectar of India.
