1. Introduction

The twelfth chapter of Ruchira Bhag 2 is titled कल्पलतेव विद्या (Kalpalateva Vidya), which means "Knowledge is like the Kalpalata." The word kalpalata refers to the celestial wish-fulfilling creeper of heaven, which grants its owner everything he desires - just like the famous kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree). The title, therefore, declares that vidya (knowledge/education) is a wish-fulfilling creeper: whatever a learned person desires can be achieved through knowledge.

This chapter is a prose lesson, usually presented as a dialogue between a teacher (आचार्यः/उपाध्यायः) and his student (शिष्यः), in which the teacher explains the immense power of vidya. The heart of the lesson is a magnificent verse that compares vidya to a mother, a father, a beloved, fame, and wealth - and then asks the striking question: "What does vidya, like the kalpalata, NOT accomplish?"

For Class 7 students, this chapter is important because: - It contains one of the most beautiful verses praising education, - It explains the sandhi कल्पलतेव (कल्पलता + इव), - It teaches many verbs showing what vidya does for a person, - And it reinforces the value that knowledge is the key to every success.

2. Lesson Meaning and Translation (Theme-wise)

2.1 The Kalpalata - A Wish-Fulfilling Creeper

स्वर्गे कल्पवृक्षः कल्पलता च वर्तते। तयोः स्पर्शनेन यत् इच्छति, तत् सर्वं प्राप्नोति।

In heaven there are the kalpavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree) and the kalpalata (wish-fulfilling creeper). By touching them, whatever one desires is obtained. In the same way, vidya is a kalpalata on the earth - by the touch of knowledge, all the desires of a person can be fulfilled. Knowledge gives what even magic cannot give.

Word meanings: स्वर्गे (in heaven), कल्पवृक्षः (wish-fulfilling tree), कल्पलता (wish-fulfilling creeper), वर्तते (is/exists), इच्छति (desires), प्राप्नोति (obtains), तथा (in the same way), सर्वम् (everything).

2.2 The Great Verse on Vidya

मातेव रक्षति पितेव हिते नियुङ्क्ते कान्तेव चाभिरमयत्यपनीय दुःखम्। कीर्तिं च दिक्षु वितनोति तनोति लक्ष्मीं किं किं न साधयति कल्पलतेव विद्या॥

Word meanings: माता इव (like a mother), रक्षति (protects), पिता इव (like a father), हिते (in welfare), नियुङ्क्ते (engages), कान्ता इव (like a beloved wife), अभिरमयति (gives joy), अपनीय (having removed), दुःखम् (sorrow), कीर्तिम् (fame), दिक्षु (in all directions), वितनोति (spreads), तनोति (extends), लक्ष्मीम् (wealth/prosperity), किम् किम् (what what), न साधयति (does not accomplish), कल्पलता इव (like the kalpalata), विद्या (education).

English translation: "Like a mother, education protects; like a father, it engages (a person) in welfare; like a beloved wife, it gives joy by removing sorrow. It spreads fame in all directions and extends wealth. What does education - which is like the kalpalata - not accomplish?"

2.3 Each Comparison Explained

Vidya is like What it does
A mother (माता) Protects us from all dangers
A father (पिता) Guides us towards what is good and beneficial
A beloved (कान्ता) Removes our sorrow and gives us happiness
Fame (कीर्तिः) Spreads our name in all directions
Wealth (लक्ष्मीः) Brings prosperity and success
Kalpalata Fulfils all desires

2.4 The Teacher's Advice to the Student

आचार्यः शिष्यम् उवाच - "हे माणवक! विद्यां परिश्रमेण गृहाण। विद्यया सर्वं साधयितुं शक्नोषि।"

The teacher said to the student, "O young man! Acquire knowledge with hard work. Through knowledge, you can accomplish everything." The student asked, "How can vidya give so much, master?" The teacher smiled and explained, "A thief cannot steal it, fire cannot burn it, and water cannot destroy it. It grows with use and stays with you till death. This is why vidya is called the kalpalata."

Word meanings: शिष्यम् (student), उवाच (said), माणवकः (young man/boy), परिश्रमेण (with hard work), गृहाण (acquire - imperative), शक्नोषि (you are able), चौरः (thief), वह्निः (fire), जलम् (water), नश्यति (destroys).

2.5 The Student's Realisation

शिष्यः प्रसन्नः अभवत्। सः निश्चयम् अकरोत् यत् सः प्रतिदिनं विद्याम् अधीयीत। विद्यया एव मनुष्यः सर्वाणि सुखानि लभते।

The student became happy. He resolved to study vidya every day. Indeed, through vidya alone a person obtains all happiness. Just as the kalpalata in heaven fulfils wishes, the kalpalata of vidya on earth fulfils the wishes of life - respect, prosperity, and joy.

Word meanings: प्रसन्नः (happy), निश्चयम् (resolve), अधीयीत (should study), प्रतिदिनम् (every day), लभते (obtains), सुखानि (happinesses), आदरः (respect).

Message of the Lesson

Vidya is the greatest wish-fulfiller. It protects like a mother, guides like a father, delights like a beloved, and brings fame and wealth. No enemy, fire, or water can destroy it. Therefore, every student must value education above all else and study with sincerity and hard work.

3. Grammar and Language Points

3.1 The Sandhi in कल्पलतेव

कल्पलतेव = कल्पलता + इव (like the kalpalata). - The final आ of कल्पलता + the initial इ of इव combine to ए (आ + इ = ए). This is a swara (vowel) sandhi.

Similarly, मातेव = माता + इव (like a mother), पितेव = पिता + इव (like a father).

3.2 The Suffix -इव (like)

3.3 Verbs Showing the Work of Vidya

Verb Meaning Comparison
रक्षति protects like a mother
नियुङ्क्ते engages like a father
अभिरमयति gives joy like a beloved
वितनोति spreads fame
तनोति extends wealth
साधयति accomplishes everything

Vibhakti Singular Plural
प्रथमा विद्या विद्याः
द्वितीया विद्याम् विद्याः
तृतीया विद्यया विद्याभिः
चतुर्थी विद्यायै विद्याभ्यः
पञ्चमी विद्यायाः विद्याभ्यः
षष्ठी विद्यायाः विद्यानाम्
सप्तमी विद्यायाम् विद्यासु

Diagram 2: The Roles of Vidya in Our Life

Vidya Plays Many Roles मातेव Protects us like a mother पितेव Guides us like a father कान्तेव Gives joy, removes sorrow कीर्तिः च Fame in all directions Vidya does all this and more - it is the kalpalata of the earth. Golden Rule No thief, fire or water can destroy knowledge - acquire it with hard work and keep it forever.

Common Mistakes

  1. Splitting कल्पलतेव wrongly: कल्पलतेव = कल्पलता + इव (not कल्पलत + एव). The sandhi आ + इ → ए.
  2. Writing मातेव as माते व: मातेव = माता + इव (like a mother). Keep the full word with the sandhi.
  3. Confusing कल्पवृक्ष and कल्पलता: Both are wish-fulfilling - the tree (वृक्ष) and the creeper (लता). The chapter title compares vidya to the creeper (लता), so be precise.
  4. Wrong verb meanings: रक्षति (protects), नियुङ्क्ते (engages), वितनोति (spreads), साधयति (accomplishes) - these are all different actions of vidya. Do not swap them.
  5. Misreading दिक्षु: दिक्षु is the सप्तमी plural of दिक् (direction), meaning "in all directions." Not "in the sky" alone.
  6. Getting the gender of विद्या wrong: विद्या is feminine (आकारान्त स्त्रीलिङ्ग), so its genitive is विद्यायाः, not विद्यस्य.
  7. Forgetting the -इव meaning: -इव means "like." Every comparison in the verse (mother-like, father-like) depends on this suffix. Never drop it in translation.

Exam Tips

  1. Memorise the full verse: The मातेव रक्षति verse is one of the most quoted verses in Class 7 Sanskrit. Learn it with correct sandhi and meaning.
  2. Master the sandhi splits: कल्पलतेव, मातेव, पितेव, कान्तेव - be ready to split and explain आ + इ = ए.
  3. Practise the comparison table: Matching "vidya is like X because Y" is a common exam question. Use Table 1.
  4. Learn the verbs of vidya: रक्षति, नियुङ्क्ते, अभिरमयति, वितनोति, तनोति, साधयति - know each meaning.
  5. Prepare the "cannot be destroyed" points: Thief, fire, water cannot take vidya. This is a favourite short-answer question.
  6. Revise the विद्या declension: विद्यायाः (genitive/ablative), विद्याम् (accusative) - learn Section 3.4.
  7. Write the value paragraph: "Vidya is like the kalpalata - it fulfils all desires, protects and guides us, and can never be lost." Practise this in Sanskrit.

Conclusion

कल्पलतेव विद्या is a poetic celebration of education. The lesson compares vidya to the heavenly wish-fulfilling creeper and shows that knowledge protects us like a mother, guides us like a father, delights us like a beloved, and brings us fame and prosperity. Best of all, no thief, fire, or water can ever take it away. This is why our culture has always placed education above all other wealth. For students, the chapter is a treasure of verses, sandhi, verbs, and values. As you study, remember: knowledge is the kalpalata of your life - water it daily with hard work, and it will grant you everything you desire.
